Stephan Huller Interview on Aeon Byte Gnostic Radio

Post by Blood »

This was a wide ranging interview: Karen King, the egotism and vanity of Biblical scholars, David Trobisch's suggestion that Codex Sinaiticus could date from the 8th century, Morton Smith and the Mar Saba document (including the news that Quentin Quesnell verified the document existed in 1983 but published nothing about it), early Christians hatred of women, and more. Recommended.
December 21 & December 22: We revisit last year's discovery of The Gospel of Jesus' Wife, which set a firestorm across both the academic and religious world. This seemingly Gnostic text, translated by Dr. Karen King and her team, remains the center of much discussion on the origins of Christianity. We take an in depth view on this manuscript, from how it came to the public, to the arguments for and against its authenticity. We also cover other recent findings like Secret Mark and The Gospel of Judas, also in question on their authenticity; and understand the problems modern scholars face in a maelstrom of fundamentalist censorship and purveyors of fraudulent ancient treasures.

The high point of the show: "Hello, Stephan... do you believe in the holy orthodox church?" (phone call from Mar Saba)

So funny. I had to unplug the headphones and share it.

I liked the portrayal of scholars as the homeliest girls at the dance, toiling in hopeless obscurity, writing papers no one actually reads, desperately wanting to find something like the "Jesus Wife" pericope so they can bask in media attention for the only time in their careers.

I also learned the correct pronunciation of "Huller" is HEW-ler. Not "HUL-er" as Robert M. Price says.

I also enjoyed the characterization of Judeo-Christian studies as "the ghetto of the Humanities," where a number of professors get their wives and girlfriends degrees so they can work at their colleges. It just undermines what a joke the entire field is, at least in America. It is all apologetics when you get right down to it.

As for the increasingly conservative nature of Biblical studies in the US that started in the '80s, I think it just mirrored the cultural/political trends at large. Morton Smith and others could work and publish in relative autonomy in the '50s and '60s because the culture was still overwhelmingly Christian and the perception among Seminary school boards and donors was that such research would have no impact on the culture or their donors. With the increasing secularization of the youth in the '70s, this was no longer the case. Seminary schools need money to operate and they now must convince donors that their faculty isn't going to convert their students into atheists or even worse, Mythicists.

Incidentally, Smith's "Jesus the Magician" is set for reprint soon with a new intro by Ehrman.

So the only reason Smith went to Mar Saba in the first place was that his landlord happened to be connected to it somehow?
