I'm trying to recreate some of the same community that we had over at the other place... this starts with trying to pick up some of the threads in progress.

The end of the Martyrdom of Polycarp readsPeter Kirby wrote:Is he? On what grounds?Stephen Huller wrote:Irenaeus is credited with writing the original account of Polycarp's death
This amounts to a claim that the text of the Martyrdom goes back to Irenaeus' copy thereof. These things Caius transcribed from the copy of Irenaeus (who was a disciple of Polycarp), having himself been intimate with Irenaeus. And I Socrates transcribed them at Corinth from the copy of Caius. Grace be with you all.
.................................................................
However: a/ This is not a direct claim that Irenaeus was involved in composing the martyrdom.
b/ There may be a question mark about the authenticity of this last section. It is not alluded to in Eusebius' version of the martyrdom.
