Nazarene

Post by Ethan »

The Nazarene vow, is too grow the forelock, refrain from shaving and abstain from any product of the Vine and at the end of the period, the Nazarene would bring four sacrifices, shave the forelock and sacrifice the hair in the fire, a symbol of self-sacrifice.

Homer's Odyssey 3.446
Then the old man, Nestor, driver of chariots, began the opening rite of hand-washing and sprinkling with barley grains, and earnestly he prayed to Athena, cutting off as first offering the hair from the head, and casting it into the fire.

Cup of Nestor from Pithekoussai (750-700 BCE)
Image

The text is written in Greek, right to left in a modified Phoenician script, found on the Italian Island of Ischia, a settlement once home to a mixed population of Greeks, Etruscans, and Phoenicians.

Nestor is the one associated with the Nazarene ritual in the Odyssey.

What is the difference between a Nazarene and a Nazarite? https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-diffe ... a-Nazarite
A Nazarite is a title for an Israelite who took a special vow before God (usually for a specified time period or, in rare instances like Samson’s, for life). They would not cut their hair, not drink alcohol, and follow a rigorous regimen of purity. See Numbers 6 for a full description.

A Nazarene is a title originally for someone who was from the Galilean city of Nazareth: a geographical term.
There is some doubt that Nazareth existed during Yoshke's time.
The two words are possibly etymologically related, though (as Karl pointed out) Nazareth and Nazarene comes to us from Hebrew and Aramaic through Greek, whereas a Nazarite is an older Hebrew word. Both are possibly based on the root nasar, which means “set apart” or “consecrated.” But more likely they are unrelated and happen to sound similar, like “hole” and “whole” in English.

The word נזר describes headgear worn on the forefront of the head, as describes in the Torah.

Leviticus 8:9 (KJV)
Upon his forefront, did he put the golden plate, the holy crown (נזר).

The King James obviously makes bad translations here, the Hebrew word ציץ is
a plant, so we know that the headgear was a yellow wreath.

The word נזר is translation in the Septuagint as πέταλον (Petal), a familiar word and the lexicon meaning is "leaf", one of the definitions is "wreath of wild olive" also called κότινος.

Leviticus 8:9 as the noun מצנפת homologue of στεφάνη and since it begins with the initial מ then the true homologue is στεφάνωμα "plants used for making garlands" and the noun ציץ to do with ἀνθίζω "deck with flowers" and ἀκανίζω "thistle-headed". The verse, also as the word מול "front" , perhaps the cognate is μωλύω or μολεύω "cut off and transplant the suckers or shoots of trees " and μασχαλίσματα "extremities cut off", so these words relates too the cutting of the hair and plants.

Genesis 49:26 (KJV)
They shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. (קדקד נזיר)

The word קדקד derives from γογγύλος "round" from γαῦλος-γύλιος
and also name for ὄλυνθος "Winter-fig" also γογγύλαις ἐλαίαι "round olives"
also φοινίξαντα γογγύλον μόρον "round red mulberry" and also an associate of
גלגלת and στρογγύλος.

In Mark 1:9, that introduces the word, it written alongside Γαλιλαίας, this word relates too γαῦλος γύλιος or γογγύλαις "round" and also κυλίνδω, κυλίω "roll" and κυκλάς "encircling"

Various passage transliterate the word, compare with Ναζαρὲτ, Ναζαρά, Ναζαραθ. ז/ζ.
- נזיריה : ναζιραῗοι (Lam 4:7)
- נזיר : ναζιραῗος (Judges 16:7)
- נזר : νεζερ (2 Kings 11:12)

Leviticus 25:11 - נזריה "undressed vine"
Leviticus 25:3 - תזמר כרמ "prune the vine"

The nouns זר & זמר are related, the Septuagint translate תזמר into its homologue , τεμεῗς , the -εῗς in this word is the prefixed ת־ and the ר is a terminal, the Doric is spelled τάμ- (זמ־) and this word is associated with Samson, in Judges 15:6 is he titled a "Timnite" (תמני) from τάμνω and this roots Latin words, templum "Temple" and tempus "period of time, interval " and also "side of the head" as in "temple" and thus affirms the cognate with זר.

Jews will find this interesting, they traditionally grow the hair on the side of the head.

Nestor (Νέστωρ) is the oldest associate of the ritual and his name very close too נצר (netser) which means "Branch", the homologue being κορμός (κείρω) and σωστός (σώζω, σωτήρ).

ז/ζ is a diphthong of δ and σ, either δσ (דצ) or σδ (צד).

צ interchanges with the rough and smooth breathing.
γ, δ, ζ, θ, κ, ξ, π, σ, σκ, στ, σχ, τχ

מצה - μάζῃ "Barley-cake"
(root) μάσσω, μάξω, μάττω, μέμαχα, μάγσω

The Hebrew lexicon can't provide a root for מצה to a word meaning "knead'
but a word for knead is לוש "knead" which is πλάσσω "to knead"

πλάσσω ↔ πάσσω ↔ μάσσω

The double consonants undergo changes in various dialects
πλάσσω , πλάσμα, πλάττω, πλαστῷ, πλαθά
לחם "Bread"
Pasta, Pitta

γράσσμα, γράφω, γράμμα , γραπτός
רשם, כתב

PIE and Hebrew lexicons are not creations of Jews, but by the Anti-Phoenician western world, hence the deliberate separation of Hebrew from it's Latin and Greek siblings unified with the Phoenician script.

That was fascinating; it always is at picture time.

Payot
Payot (Hebrew: פֵּאָה‬; plural: פֵּאוֹת‬), also pronounced pe'ot, peyot; or payos, peyos, peyois, payois in Ashkenazi pronunciation, is the Hebrew word for sidelocks or sideburns. Payot are worn by some men and boys in the Orthodox Jewish community based on an interpretation of the Biblical injunction against shaving the "corners" of one's head. Literally, pe'ah means "corner, side, edge".
Nazirites didn't cut their hair, and this is an example of not cutting sidelocks, so I guess that is related.

https://biblehub.com/hebrew/5145.htm

And he set the headdress on his head; and on the headdress, in front, he put the gold frontlet, the holy diadem -- as the LORD had commanded Moses. (Lev. 8:9 TNK)

‎מִצְנֶ֣פֶת mitsnephet https://biblehub.com/hebrew/4701.htm turban (of the high priest)

appears in Exodus 28, 29, and 39, and Leviticus 8 and 16. The only other time it appears in the bible is:
thus said the Lord GOD: Remove the turban and lift off the crown! This shall not remain as it is; exalt the low and abase the high. (Ezek. 21:31 TNK)
‎כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה הָסִיר֙ הַמִּצְנֶ֔פֶת וְהָרִ֖ים הָֽעֲטָרָ֑ה זֹ֣את לֹא־זֹ֔את הַשָּׁפָ֣לָה הַגְבֵּ֔הַ וְהַגָּבֹ֖הַ הַשְׁפִּֽיל׃

This has the phrase ‎אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה (Lord YHWH) - which appears many times in the bible, including clearly post exilic verses. This is pronounced Adonai Elohim now instead of Adonai Adonai. I always thought this was cool because obviously they didn't pronounce the Tetragrammaton as adonai until sometime later. I'm not sure when that happened, presumably the Great_Assembly is a candidate, but I'm not sure how much I'd bet that that actually happened.
