There was no burning bush

Post by Ethan »

Moses was in Egypt in Exodus 1-2 and he somehow ended up in the Sinai Peninsula encountering a 'Burning Bush'.

אש (Esh) is a poetic word for Ice or Snow and is used throughout the Hebrew scriptures.

Exodus 9:23 - LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire
Exodus 9:24 - So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail
Genesis 19:24 - hoarfrost and fire
Ezekiel 38:22 - hailstones, fire, and hoarfrost
Psalms 18:13 - hail stones and coals of fire
Isaiah 30:33 - stream of hoarfrost , doth kindle it.

The word mistranslated as Brimstone is גפרית that is ככפר from κρύος/κρύσταλλος
see Job 38:29 "hoary frost of heaven"

The word Bush is סנה (Cenah), this is another word for סיני (Cinai) , שניר (Shenir) and שיאן (Sion)
from χεῖμα (Cheim) or χιόνα (Chion) "Snow".

Job 6:15-7 - Winter torrent
My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks they pass away
Which are blackish by reason of the ice, and wherein the snow is hid
What time they wax warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place

Exodus 4:6 - Moses dipped his hand into his Bosom and his hand was leprous as Snow and a similar scene occurs in
Numbers 12:1 - a Cloud departed... Miriam became leprous, white as snow.

Exodus 3:2
And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of the Snow: and he looked and behold, the snow burned with fire and the snow was not consumed. Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight and why the snow not melted.

* Moses encountered a winter-torrent upon the mountains of Hermon.

The burning bush

Rashi on Exodus 3:2

3:1
[HE LED THE SHEEP] BEHIND THE DESERT — in order to keep them away from private property (גֶזֵל i. e. things which can be appropriated only as the result of “robbery”) — that they should not graze in other people’s fields (Exodus Rabbah 2:3).
TO THE MOUNTAIN OF GOD — Scripture so names it with reference to what happened there in the future (Sifrei on Deuteronomy 1:24).
3:2
בלבת אש means IN A FLAME OF FIRE, i. e. in the very heart of (לב) the fire. Similarly is לב used of inanimate objects in: (Deuteronomy 4:11) “in the heart of (לב) heaven”; (II Samuel 18:14) “in the midst of (לב) the terebinth”. Do not be puzzled by the ת, although the ordinary word for heart, לב. does not require the suffix ת in the construct form, because we have another example of this form, viz., (Ezekiel 16:30) “how weak is thy heart (לבתך)”.‎
OUT OF THE MIDST OF A BUSH (a thornbush) — and not from any other tree, in accordance with the idea (Psalms 91:15) “I will be with him in trouble” (Midrash Tanchuma, Shemot 14).
It is of the same grammatical form as, (Deuteronomy 21:3) “which hath not been wrought with (עֻבַּר)”; (Genesis 3:23) “whence he was taken (לֻקַח):

Sadal
3:2
1 "He saw an angel": and then it explains what he saw, since in all places the Holy Blessed One does [G!d's own] mission.
"In the heart of the fire": libah instead of lehava, and thus in the Mishna [Bava Qama 6:4]. From the bush [sneh]: from the thorn bushes that were on that mountain, and thence it was called Sinai (cf. ibn Ezra). Now the bush was on fire, but it was not really burning, but was surrounded by flames like a burning object, since the fire was flashing between the thorns, but did not take to them, and thus at first Moses saw the fire amid the bush, and the bush flashing with fire, and then he saw that it was not burnt, and he said: 'Let me turn aside to see' why this bush is not burning. The root b.'.r. in Qal is an active verb, and its meaning is the flames of fire and also the burning of the object which is on fire, since it is customary in the world that there is no separation between the flames and the burning, but here the bush was on fire, but was not burnt.

Tikkun
The Burning Bush and Black Fire
by Rabbi Fern Feldman
Moses had a revolutionary, revelatory experience while he was following his flock of sheep in Midian. The Torah, in Exodus 3:2 tell us:
וירא מלאך יהוה אליו בלבת־אש מתוך הסנה וירא והנה הסנה בער באש והסנה איננו אכל:
“An angel of Adonai appeared to him in a blazing fire out of a bush. He gazed, and there was a bush all aflame, yet the bush was not consumed.”
The burning bush that is not consumed sparked the movement for liberation from slavery that not only birthed our people, but continues to inspire liberation movements. It can inspire us, and give us guidance in how to take further steps in our own movements toward liberation in whatever forms we are called to.
So, what is the burning bush here to teach us?

The Garden of Eden is described in Ezekiel and he mentioned the Mountain of God in that area and people who live in Israel should know the mountains that border them in the North.

Ezekiel 31:16 - All the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon.

Ezek31:18 is my choice for this chapter

To whom have you likened yourself so with glory and with greatness among the trees of Eden, and you were lowered with the trees of Eden into the nether part of the earth; among the uncircumcised you shall lie with those slain by the sword; that is Pharaoh and all his multitude," says the Lord God.

Ezekiel 31:4
The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers(תעלת) unto all the trees of the field.

תעלת = Hiddekel (Gen 2:14)

Ezekiel 31:9 - The cedars in the garden of God
Ezekiel 31:16 - all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon

Where do cedars grow in the Levant?

Ancient Jews that lived in Levant primarily made WINE and then it's given too the Phoenicians and they sell it around the Mediterranean
and if the snow of the Lebanese mountains did not melt and steep into the rivers to rejuvenate the vineyards then the business will be dead.

The purpose of Noah's flood is too fertilize the soil for Noah too plant a vineyard.

Gen 9:20
And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard
John 15:1
I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

It is relevant , Moses and Noah are duplicate of each other and the same word is used
for the ARK and the Basket of Moses.

Exodus 2:5 - She saw the ark (תבה)
Genesis 7:15 - Noah into the ark (תבה)

children of Noah populate the Levant
children of Israel populate the Levant

Same story over and over again throughout the Old Testament.
