I've always thought the utterances had to "shout" at the people from the pews. It had to be simple, straightforward. The Exodus and Deuteronomy text isn't preserving the original "simple" inscription. Philo and the gospel testifies to this when they preserve "do not lust" as the tenth commandment. It came from this.
