Justin Martyr, Jewish subtractions from, & Christian additions to scripture.

Discussion about the New Testament, apocrypha, gnostics, church fathers, Christian origins, historical Jesus or otherwise, etc.

Ben,

Have you looked at William Adler, "Jews as Falsifiers" in Translation of Scripture, ed. D. M. Goldberg (Philadelphia: JQRSup, 1990) 3-27? Adler suggests that Justin was working from testimony books rather than complete biblical texts, and also that he had an ulterior motive for what he said about your passage B:
When Justin first introduced the idea of Jewish tampering, he
too sensed the implausibility of his own suggestion that the Jews
had in such a short time managed to obliterate from their own
copies every vestige of troublesome readings. Surely some manu
scripts must have survived the onslaught! In the Dialogue he
hoped to forestall this objection by intimating that the Jews still
had in their possession copies of their Scripture that had escaped
emendation.60

Note: 60 "And from the sayings of Jeremiah they have cut out the following, 'I [was]
like a lamb that is brought to slaughter....' And ... this passage from the
sayings of Jeremiah is still written in some copies [of Scripture] in the synagogues
of the Jews (for it was only a short time since they were cut out)" (Dialogue 72
[ANF 1:234-235]).
I can send you a PDF of the article if you like.

Best,

Ken

Excellent. That would dovetail nicely with something I wrote on a related thread.

I would appreciate that. Thanks!
