Justin's Apol. 65-67 from Ott. Gr. 274 and Parisinus Gr. 450

Post by MrMacSon »

Translated from German -

Valuable transcripts of the two most important manuscripts of the important chapters 65-67 have been produced.
  • The Codex Ottobonianus graecus 274 can be found in the digital Bibliotheca Vaticana (DVL), Folio 1r to 2r offer Just Apol. 65-67. The Codex Parisinus graecus 450 is kept accessible by the Bibiothèque natinale de France as a digitized version and offers this text on Folio 236r, Z. 22 to 238v, Z. 4 .

... the transcripts provided here form a good starting point for a new critical edition of the ritual-historical crucial chapters 65 to 67.

The transcripts are available to all interested parties as TEI XML files. They may be freely re-used under consideration of the Creative Commons Attribution - Share Alike 2.0 Germany LicenseCreative Commons License .

Previously,

... For the reconstruction of Justin's Apology, only a manuscript (Parisinus gr. 450, aD 1363) is used as a basis in the current historical-critical editions. The manuscript British Loan 36 (formerly Claromontanus 82) represents a direct copy of the Paris manuscript, the Codex Ottobonianus graecus 274, which testifies only to chapters 65-67, is considered by the majority as inferior. Other manuscripts, which also contain only chapters 65-67, are completely disregarded (see Marcovich, 7, note 15).

Since in the Codex Ottobonianus in 1 Apol. 65.3 καὶ κράματος is missing, and Harnack has already derived a water Eucharist from this absence in Justin, there is a variant relevant to ritual history. For an evaluation of this variant, however, an exact determination of the ratio of Ottobonianus and Parsinius is necessary. From our point of view, this has not been satisfactorily accomplished in research.

From the exact digital development of the two manuscripts and the discussion of the individual variants, we hope to be able to contribute to the more precise determination of this relationship. The comparison of the manuscripts with the common editions has shown that especially the numerous emendations in these are to be judged critically.
