I think we should be asking ourselves "what exactly were the beliefs in pre-scriptural times?" Assuming that the text is the source of the tradition as opposed to bearing witness to the tradition is what has led too many researchers astray.

Given the story the bearest benefit of the doubt, we should look to what historical figures link up to our little story.

The first is Simon of Cyrene, who is he? The most likely candidate is Lukuas-Andreas, who hailed from Cyrene.

Well, Simon is known for helping Jesus carry the cross, and is effectively crucified himself in Basilides and Islamic traditions.

There just so happens to be a tradition of another Simon being crucified in Jerusalem roughly around 117 ad, right when Lukuas is active.

So then who are Alexander and Rufus?

Who were supporters of Lukuas? The brothers Julian Alexander, and Pappus.

Beyond mystifying presumptions or false ideas about temporal placement, this is the closest we will ever get to understanding the historical significance of these figures.
