The Gospel of the Ebionites as An Expansion of a Source Behind the Gospel of Mark

Post by Secret Alias »

But the beginning of their Gospel is, “It came to pass in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, that man, John, came baptizing with the baptism of repentance in the river Jordan, and he was said to be of the lineage of Aaron the priest, the son of Zacharias and Elizabeth, and all went out unto him.”
I wonder whether the underlying source text simply read:
“Finally, from so little sleeping and so much reading, his brain dried up and he went completely out of his mind.”

Yes definitely. I would add the gospel - attributed to Luke (perhaps by a later editor) - Clement:

And in the fifteenth year, in the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zacharias. And again in the same book: And Jesus was coming to His baptism, being about thirty years old, and so on. And that it was necessary for Him to preach only a year, this also is written: He has sent Me to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord . This both the prophet spoke, and the Gospel

My sense is that specific time markers (i.e. 'the age of Herod' 'Tiberius Caesar') were absent in the underlying ur-text. These seem to have been added later or enhanced.

Something new I didn't notice before (which I think Ben was trying to alert me to):
