I was not in a position to look up what Clement's original Greek was. Still am not.

Your explanation did not seem especially clear to me, Stephan.

Who, exactly, says what?
Well, since SA did not respond to my objection that I, as I think is the case with most folks, just don't have these texts available for ready analysis. What I needed was comparative texts.

Believe it or not, a unicode Greek text of Clement's Quis dives salvetur is available at the Ruslan Khazarzar website,
http://khazarzar.skeptik.net/pgm/PG_Migne/

The backstory, as I understand it, was that the owner of the files had created a load of Unicode Greek transcriptions, ostensibly from Migne's editions with some editorial corrections, which were available online, hosted by his academic institution. His institution, in cash-strapped Greece, was sued by TLG because they said some of those corrections to Migne's text were derived from their TLG database without attribution. Apparently the Greek academic institution to which owner of the files was affiliated could not afford to fight the TLG lawsuit, and in consequence removed the files from their website. No longer able to use the institutions' webhost, he accepted an offer from Ruslan Khazarzar to host them. Interesting.

For those, like me, who need an English translation to put things in perspective, here it is:

CF-E Clement's Rich Man Ch 4
RSV Mark 10
RSV Matthew 19
RSV Luke 18
CRM 4:7 ... And he was sad at that saying, Mk 10:22a At that saying Mat 19:22a When the young man heard this Luk 18:23a But when he heard this
8a and went away grieved: 22b his countenance fell, and he went away sorrowful; 22b he went away sorrowful; 23b he became sad,
8b for he was rich, having great possessions [he had riches many and lands]. 22c for he had great possessions. 22c for he had great possessions. 23c for he was very rich.
8c And Jesus looked round about, and saith to His disciples, 23a And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, 23a And Jesus said to his disciples, 24a Jesus looking at him [became very sad and] said,
8d How hardly shall they that have riches 23b "How hard it will be for those who have riches 23b "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man 24b "How hard it is for those who have riches
8e enter into the kingdom of God! 23c to enter the kingdom of God!" 23c to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24c to enter the kingdom of God!
9a And the disciples were astonished at His words. 24a And the disciples were amazed at his words.
9b But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, 24b But Jesus said to them again, 24a Again I tell you,
9c Children, how hard is it 24c "Children, how hard it is
9d for them that trust in riches
9e to enter into the kingdom of God! 24d to enter the kingdom of God!
9f More easily shall a camel enter through the eye of a needle 25a It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle 24b it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle 25a For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
9g than a rich man into the kingdom of God. 25b than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 24c than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." 25b than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

To sum it up, Clement's What Rich Man is saved?
* 4.8b uses χρήματα (riches) where Mark 10:22c/Matthew 19:22c use κτήματα (possessions) and Luke 18:23 uses πλούσιος (wealthy/rich)
* 4.8d uses χρήματα (riches) along with Mark 10:23b & Luke 18:24b, while Matthew 19:23b uses πλούσιος (wealthy/rich).
* 4.9d uses χρήμασιν (riches) which is in a section of text taken, it seems, from Mark 10:24. No parallel to this section is in Matthew or Luke.
* 4.9g uses πλούσιος (a rich man) which in the form πλούσιον is found in Mark 10: 25b; Matthew 19:24b; and Luke 18:25b.

Make of this what you will ...

Re: I Think Clement's Argument in QDS is Starting to Make Sense to Me

Post by Secret Alias »

Well because my argument made sense to Andrew I thought because one person got it everyone was on board. All the terms connected with χράομαι throughout the section should be render as 'thing' or 'things' which allows the juxtaposition (which Andrew notes Clement already draws our attention to in Luke 10:41, 42 as part of his argument). Jesus says:

1. there is one God the Father who is the 'good God' Chrestos (unsaid but clearly lurking behind every corner)
2. and that we must give up 'many things' for the one Good Thing (= Chrestos).

I thought you understood that.

I have problems enough reading my wife's mind, much less yours, Stephan. My reading is that Clement drew from something like Mark, but harmonized some differences so it all revolved around χρήματα/χρήμασιν. He *could* have gone the πλούσιος/πλούσιον route like Matthew and Luke did at different places, or κτήματα as Mark and Matthew did, but he did retain πλούσιος/πλούσιον in the final sentence, as all the synoptic gospels do.

His text of Mark was a 'harmonized' text (or conversely our canonical text was stripped of various readings 'ghettoized' in the Four).
