Digitalized MSS from St Catherines Online

Post by Secret Alias »

Saw this on a discussion forum:
Many of you know that in the late 1940s the Library of Congress sent teams to the Monastery of Sta. Catherine on Mt. Sinai, to the Greek and Armenian Patriarchates of Jerusalem, and to Mt. Athos to select and microfilms manuscripts from their collections. These sets have been available since then to view at the Library of Congress; scholars and researchers were also able to buy microform copies of their desired manuscripts.

Two years ago we received approval to digitize these valuable sets and I am pleased to announce that the 1636 manuscripts from Mt. Sinai are as of this morning freely available to the worldwide community. The link is: https://www.loc.gov/collections/manuscr ... ollection/

There is only one Armenian manuscript in this set (commentary on Aristotle); most, of course, are in Greek, but there are many in Georgian, Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Ge’ez, Old Church Slavonic, etc.

We have updated the _Checklist_ in the metadata and searching is available. We have also attempted to provide Uniform Titles and Name Authorities in accordance with Library of Congress and American Library Association rules and regulations.

I hope to make a similar announcement concerning the Jerusalem Patriarchate sets in the near future.
