RBL review of The Didache: A Missing Piece of the Puzzle

Post by DCHindley »

There is a new RBL review of the most recent critical book about the Didache by Jonathan Draper and Clayton Jefford, eds. The Didache: A Missing Piece of the Puzzle in Early Christianity (Early Christianity and Its Literature 14 Atlanta: SBL Press, 2015, a mere $76 paperback & $100 hardbound), by H. H. Drake Williams III in RBL 9/2016:

Looks like MrMacson had already posted this link to the TOC & Jefford's introduction:

According to the review article of Sept 2016 RBL, "[a]ll of these articles [in the 2015 book] emerged from the Didache in Context seminar held at the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meetings during the early 2000s."

Previous to that a series of SBL seminars on the Didache in the 1990s produces a couple of other similar volumes: The Didache in Context (1995), and The Didache in Modern Research (1996). A table of the authors who presented and their articles are as follows:

The articles above (at least the English ones) provided a great deal of food for thought, but I had trouble swallowing the Sociological model assumed by the majority of the critics. I'm still digesting Max Weber

That being the case, I just might have to order this later one from the local university's inter-library loan department, and bring myself up to date.

DCH, thank you for your reading suggestions. They stimulated me to study the apocalyptic final chapter of this early Christian writing again. I will shortly start a new topic on Didache XVI.
