After quotations are removed, the extant letter of Origen to Africanus ('Epistula ad Africanum') is 3146 words long. The same list of 33 words is used. 'Origen' is represented by the text of the Contra Celsum. Origen is selected as the best candidate out of 33 candidates, including the controls.

Eight samples were taken from the 'Commentarium in evangelium Joannis' (books 19, 20, 28, 32): one comprising the 19th book (4090 words long), three from the 20th book (lengths of 3243, 3207, and 3233 words), two from the 28th book (2732 and 2665 words), and two from the 32nd book (3861 and 3930 words). The direct quotations were removed first. The same list of 33 words was used. The author of the Contra Celsum was treated as the 'Origen' candidate. Origen was considered the best candidate for authorship, out of 33 candidates including the controls, 8 out of 8 times (100% accuracy).

Re: Origen -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Post by Peter Kirby » Fri Jun 05, 2015 7:55 pm

Peter Kirby wrote:
Stephan Huller wrote:When you said you tested the Commentary on John did you compare the first chapters with the last? I forget where the exact division starts but many people think Cyril of Alexandria is the author when the chapters get into the 20s.
The TLG lists the books in Greek of the Commentary on John as (all or part of): books 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 13.

All the Greek text in that part of this study comes from those books.

There are some other fragments attributed to 'catena' that haven't yet been reviewed.
It turns out that the TLG divides them into two parts, with the books 19 and up in a separate part.

In order to test this hypothesis, I added the full extant text (minus quotes) of Cyril's Against Julian, to go head-to-head with Origen's Against Celsus (and Eusebius' Preparation of the Gospel), as a possible author of this text.

Here were those results. Cyril is author candidate $VAR3.

In all eight samples, Cyril of Alexandria ranges from 'terrible' to 'really terrible' as an author candidate on stylometric grounds (p-value < 0.01 ... or less).

There are extant some 'Fragmenta in evangelium Joannis (in catenis)'. Once quotations are removed, it is 1610 words long. It may be too short in length to expect a reliable result. It is also an amalgam of several different authors making citations. And there may be some errors in discerning where the direct quotations actually are. In any case, it seems slightly closer to Origen than to Eusebius, yet slightly closer still to one of the controls, if it matters.

Could both and/or Pamphilus have contributed to it?

Yes. It's a letter from Origen to Africanus.

Keep in mind that this is not a text. This is an amalgam of several different references, most of them made after Eusebius, to the "Commentary on John". The Commentary on John is by Origen (on stylometric grounds and any other grounds).

On non-stylometric grounds, the most likely hypothesis is that these are mostly/entirely actual references to the actual commentary on John by Origen... yet they might have been polluted somehow, with the most obvious reason being that indirect speech or something might have been caught when I was making excerpts... or, perhaps, that quotations/references made by secondary parties do not preserve the kind of natural language data we need in a bias-free way (introducing a type of 'selection' bias, either by choosing certain parts to quote or not quote, or by omitting certain parts of the quote or rewording them slightly). And, of course, the shorter the text, the less able we are to make any meaningful stylometric decision.

In short, move along folks nothing to see here.

(Of course you can believe whatever you choose to believe. But it would have nothing to do with the stylometry...)

Re: Origen -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Clement of Alexandria has been moved from 'control' to 'author candidate' (control #31 takes the place that Clement had as control #25 and becomes author candidate #3), and Cyril of Alexandria has been added as an author candidate (#4). Clement of Alexandria is represented by his 'trilogy' (Protrepticus, Paedagogus, and Stromata--without quotations). Cyril of Alexandria is represented by 'Against Julian' and his 'Commentary on John' (without quotations).

The controls now are: #1 Mark, #2 John, #3 1 Corinthians, #4 Hebrews, #5 Revelation, #6 Letter of Aristeas, #7 1 Maccabees, #8 2 Maccabees, #9 Polybius, #10 Diodorus Siculus, #11 Dionysius Halicarnassus, #12 Strabo, #13 Plutarch, #14 Arrian, #15 Herodian, #16 Herodotus, #17 Thucydides, #18 Xenophon, #19 Epictetus, #20 Galen, #21 Lucian, #22 Philostratus, #23 Josephus, #24 Acts, #25 Gregory Nyssenus, #26 Justin Martyr, #27 Theophilus of Antioch, #28 Athanasius, #29 John Chrysostom, and #30 Basil.

Four samples are taken from the text 'Fragmenta in Lamentationes (in catenis)', each approximately 2000 words long. This appears to have a continuous source, which is some 'catena'. The quotations were removed first. Among the four author candidates, 'Origen' is picked as the most likely for the first sample, while 'Clement of Alexandria' is picked as the most likely for the other three samples. This is sufficient to reject the (null) hypothesis that Origen may have authored the entire thing. One possibility is that this was written by Clement of Alexandria. Another possibility is that a text written by Clement of Alexandria was extensively used and adapted by Origen.
