Re: Origen -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Post by Peter Kirby »

The compilation known as the 'Philocalia' was broken into 17 samples, each approximately 3500 words in length. The same list of 33 words was used. The author of the 'Contra Celsum' was considered the 'Origen' author candidate. Between Origen and Eusebius, Origen was selected as the better author candidate 16 of 17 times (94% accuracy). When 31 controls are added as candidates, Origen was selected as the best candidate, out of 33 total candidates, 15 out of 17 times (88% accuracy). The ultimate author of the Philocalia, said to be compiled by Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus as excerpts from the Alexandrian church father's works, clearly seems to be Origen.

Re: Origen -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Post by Peter Kirby »

Six samples are taken of the homilies known as 'In Jeremiam' 12-20 (continuing the numbered homilies on Jeremiah). The samples are taken along homily division: 12th-13th Homily (4195 words), 14th Homily (3791 words), 15th-16th Homily (3612 words), 17th-18th Homily (4283 words), 19th Homily (2187 words), and 20th Homily (4516 words). Direct quotes were removed first. The same list of 33 words was used. The author of the Contra Celsum was treated as the 'Origen' candidate. Between Eusebius and Origen, Origen is picked over Eusebius 6 out of 6 times. Origen is picked over all the controls for the 12th-13th Homily, the 17th-18th Homily, the 19th Homily, and the 20th Homily. A control is selected over Origen for the other two samples (14th Homily Homily, 15th-16th Homily).

Re: Origen -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Post by Peter Kirby »

There are a total of eleven samples taken from the homilies known as 'In Jeremiam' (6 out of 11 positive). This is enough to perform a meta-analysis comparing the results of these 11 samples to the results of the authenticated works of Origen (so far): Contra Celsum (40 out of 52 positives), De principiis (4 out of 4 positives), Commentarii in evangelium Joannis (8 out of 10 positives), De oratione (6 out of 6 positives), Homiliae in Lucam (2 out of 3 positives), and Philocalia (15 out of 17 positives), for a total of 75 out of 92 positive (81.5%). The question is whether the results are significantly different from the results for the authentic works (and, thus, whether all twenty homilies could be authentic).

In JeremiamControl Group (Results in Authentic Works)
Positives675
Negatives517

Chi-square value: 4.2567
degrees of freedom: 1
one-tailed p-value (chi-squared test): 0.0195 (this is <0.05)
one-tailed p-value (Fisher's exact test): 0.054 (this is >0.05)

It is plausible to assume that all twenty of the homilies 'In Jeremiam' came from Origen, but it doesn't seem very likely.

Playing around a bit with Fisher's exact test, the following seem to be the minimum requirements (the minimum number of negative results for the given number of positive results) for declaring inauthenticity (partial inauthenticity, anyway) demonstrated at the p-value < 0.05 significance level.
  • 0 positive, 2 negative
  • 1 positive, 3 negative
  • 2 positive, 4 negative
  • 3 positive, 4 negative
  • 4 positive, 5 negative
  • 5 positive, 5 negative
  • 6 positive, 6 negative
  • 7 positive, 6 negative
  • 8 positive, 6 negative
  • 9 positive, 7 negative
  • 10 positive, 7 negative
And so on...

This seems to imply that the results in the case of the 'catena' homily on Jeremiah, discussed before, most likely qualify as 'not Origen'.

(But small numbers are small numbers.)

When you said you tested the Commentary on John did you compare the first chapters with the last? I forget where the exact division starts but many people think Cyril of Alexandria is the author when the chapters get into the 20s.

Similarly when Andrew and I were talking about his thing on Leviticus. I noticed when I was using Google books that the really old versions of the work attribute it to Cyril

The TLG lists the books in Greek of the Commentary on John as (all or part of): books 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 13.

All the Greek text in that part of this study comes from those books.

There are some other fragments attributed to 'catena' that haven't yet been reviewed.

Nineteen samples were taken from the 'Commentarium in evangelium Matthaei' (books 12-17), each approximately 4000 words in length. The direct quotations were removed first. The same list of 33 words was used. The author of the Contra Celsum was treated as the 'Origen' candidate. Between Eusebius and Origen, Origen is selected as the better candidate 19 out of 19 times (100% accuracy). When the 31 controls are included as well, Origen is selected as the best candidate 18 out of 19 times (94.7% accuracy). Origen clearly seems to be the author.

Re: Origen -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Post by Peter Kirby »

I have streamlined the order and amount of information printed out a bit more (again).

The sample size, the comparison of the author candidates, and the comparison of the best author candidate to the best control candidate are now easily visible at the top.

This is followed by the two other tests/indicators of 'general reliability' and/or 'non-relative compatibility', shown afterward.

The control Z-scores-based p-values bring up the rear.
