Evidence for different forgeries may vary

Post by StephenGoranson »

Given: there are many different views on "Letter to Theodore."

In this case we have photos of three pages, transcriptions, translations, and a huge secondary literature.

We also have much by and about Morton Smith.
Among others, Ariel Sabar in The Atlantic (magazine), April, 2024. Some think it was too much on sex, but, be that as it may, it also includes other well-researched, vetted, reliable information.

From Smith himself we have two 1973 books, his memoir and his analysis.
Plus, Guy Stroumsa, who accompanied the Voss book to Jerusalem, JECS, 2003, edited by the late, great Liz Clark.
Quentin Quesnell papers, Vigiliae Christianae 2007, co-author, Stephan Hüller.
Two NY Times articles, Dec. 1958.
"The Score," HTR 1982.
Correspondence between MS and Scholem, inter alia, mentioning a book on Mark early on planned by MS and MS comparing Jesus to Sabbatai Sevi (Scholem demurred).
Review of Taylor's Commentary on Mark, HTR 1955.
"Monasteries and their Manuscripts," Archaeology 1960.
Nea Sion 1960.
California colloquium with MS and Charles Murgia, classical scholar, and others, pub. 1976.
The MS papers in the Jewish Theological Seminary Archive in NYC, which includes relevant unpublished materials.
And much more.

Therefore, in this case, in addition to photos of three pages in Voss,
some of this other associated evidence
in this case
is relevant.
