Communal worship

Mary beard's series on Rome noted that a temple is a home for a god, where they were basically left alone with a priest as a form of housekeeper and taken out for various public displays and ceremonies.

She noted that the emperor's throne room in Triere was now a church where a different form of approaching the gods happened, a large group in the hous e of a god doing this new fangled thing called worship.

Anyone know about this obvious change of religious practice?
