Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

You mean Appian, Civil Wars , book 2, chapter 20 (sect 145)? "It seems to me, fellow-citizens, that this deed is not the work of human beings, but of some evil spirit. ἔοικεν, ὦ πολῖται, τὰ γεγενημένα ἀνδρῶν μὲν οὐδενός, ἀλλά του δαιμόνων ἔργα εἶναι. (the English translation above is that of Ho...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

"Idiot" comes from "idiotes" meaning a private person or a layman. Here's the point: if "archon" can mean any kind of authority, then you can't automatically exclude that it could also have referred to conspiratiorial senators, and that that's where the spirits/demons ...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

Has it not occurred to folks that the term can be used of ANY SORT OF ORGANIZATIONAL AUTHORITY? Do we not have significant information that most ancients of the Roman period believed that the world was controlled by elementary spirits (usually called "daimons") who were organized in a mili...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

There seems to be only the faintest realization being exhibited here that there are three key Greek words that are inconsistently translated into English. " Aiōn " ( αἰών ) = a period of time, an age (as differentiated from another age), improperly translated sometimes as "world"...

IIRC, Aren't you forgetting that Lincoln's personal secretary was named Kennedy, and Kennedy's personal secretary was named Lincoln?

Re: Josephus and Dating Pilate

Isn't it easier to see Josephus' claims to prophetic ability to extend, by necessity, from his "prophetic" prediction that Vespasian would one day be acclaimed emperor, or at least something vague enough to be interpreted this way when Vespasian was actually acclaimed imperator by the Alex...

Re: Was Paul Josephus?

That's why people insist on talking about Josephus when talking about the supposed historical background of Paul. But that means that for all practical purposes Paul is Josephus. The abrupt ending of Acts is because of Nero's damnatio. That's the simplest assumption. People insist on talking about ...

Re: What was Jerome talking about??

Josephus mentions (or invents) these prodigies as a way to show that the populace was mistaken to revolt against Rome; and were foolish not to listen to their teachers and the elite classes, who wanted to mend relations. "these prodigies" - you mean Peter & Paul? I should have said &q...

Re: Josephus and Dating Pilate

Well, Take it from someone who went to High School with BOTH Pilate and Josephus (my dad kept getting promoted so we moved a lot), they never dated one another. Joe was a manly man type guy, you know, all hairy and sweaty, while Pilate was a high flying dude. How do you think he got his name "P...
