Re: Church of the Holy Sepulchre

So even if one wants to argue that the alleged suburb was uninhabited, one still is left with the job of mapping out the first and second walls that were built by Herod before the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. Those "walls" did not exist, or left rather no archeological trace. Nothi...

Re: Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The theory that Aelia Capitolina, "the old city" was a suburb, has never been proven. And in fact there doesn't seem to be anything underneath the Roman polis to indicate there was anything there before the Romans built it. The only thing they have found are Byzantine/Roman artifacts. This...

Re: Church of the Holy Sepulchre

There has been recent news about efforts to further explore the alleged tomb of Jesus that is found in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/jesus-christs-tomb-found-contain-limestone-burial-shelf-engraved-marble-slab-1589155?utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=referral&utm_cam...

Re: How late might the gospels be?

I'll ask Dr. Detering directly today if he still holds that view. It was paper from almost two decades ago when he wrote that. I think he was flat wrong about the statue for two basic reasons: 1) there is no evidence at all that Hadrian placed statues of himself in front of any temples. But there i...

Re: The date of the epistle of Barnabas.

Prediction of a rebuilding of the temple had a limited window of time for the hoping, setting the terminus ad quem at 135. That requires buying into the theory that it a) refers to Aelia Capitolina and that specific time b) that it refers to a physical temple c) that it was "timely" in it...

Re: The date of the epistle of Barnabas.

The epistle of Barnabas is in codex Sinaiticus, so for certain no later than the mid-4th century. It is mentioned by Origen (mid-3rd century) and Clement (early 3rd century) The assumption that it was written in in the early 130s with the Romans building Aelia Capitolina based on this passage of ver...

Re: How late might the gospels be?

Dio is not from 131 AD, but much later. But he does place the founding of Aelia Capitolina from about that date, and this fits with Numismatic evidence of the founding of Aelia Capitolina right before the revolt. Dio's Ῥωμαϊκὴ Ἱστορία was written around 229 AD (at least that is the last date of even...

Re: How late might the gospels be?

What I am saying here is the Jews in John's Gospel are in fact stand-ins for Jewish Christians, that is those who accept the OT and the Davidic Jesus, who oppose John's own "Gentile" Christian sects version of Jesus, who rejects the Jewish God. This is a mid to late 2nd century debate, no...

Re: How late might the gospels be?

Unless I'm misunderstanding him, Stuart Waugh makes the case that they are all post the Bar Kochba revolt. Hopefully he will chime in and elaborate. Yes. ... Is that sufficient chiming in? While I think some form of Christianity, or pre-Christianity existed or was evolving into Christianity in the ...
