Re: John 18: 19 - 23: "What Did the High Priest Say?"

Of course the "I am not" proclamation (denial) by Peter seen in John 18:17 is repeated identically by Peter in 18:25, meaning that everything between these repeated words of Peter (which rather likely were only written once in the original) may potentially be a later insertion. Thus there ...

Re: John 18: 19 - 23: "What Did the High Priest Say?"

The duplicated retort that "Jesus answered him" appears to perhaps be an indication of a redactional stitch. That which resides between such 'stitches' is often presumed to be an interpolation.

Re: What's Wrong with "The Realm of Heaven" Being Real?

Before this Thread disappears into the Depths, is there anyone who might have some Constructive Comments on the Subject? Well, it does appear that there is the coming promise of a new heaven (likely among a multiplicity of extant heavens) and a new earth, presumably along with a new Holy City reple...

Re: "Mucianus" as Template for "Paul"

Are we historically certain that Cestius died by hanging himself, or is that meant to be allegorical, just as for the losing/spilling of his guts?

Re: NTJ != HJ, ∴ no evidence of HJ?

Again, more specifically: At what point does a portrayal of the historical Jesus become "vastly or even completely different to" the NT Jesus? For example, have Crossan and J. P. Meier and E. P. Sanders and Gerd Theissen crossed the line into presenting one that is "vastly or even co...

Re: "Mucianus" as Template for "Paul"

Here is the Program, from the Jewish POV. The Roman Empire, formerly a bit more Collegial, is about to do just what you assert. The FEAR is given in verses 46 - 48. The Jews are given a choice: Accept this imposition of the savior/god story or face destruction and annihilation. The character "...

Re: "Mucianus" as Template for "Paul"

How, I wonder, do you reconcile all of that with a slave cult? I'm suggesting that it likely began as an evolving slave religion. My conception of "slave" is not by any means as constricted or delimited or 'southern USA slavery colored glasses' envisioned/blinded such as it appears to me ...

Re: "Mucianus" as Template for "Paul"

It must also be considered that many Roman slaves were not Jews, and did not share in their faith, but rather initially held other faith(s). The unifying bond of the condition of slavery may have provided a sort of level playing field from which to share, merge, and amalgamate beliefs. Thus Christia...

Re: "Mucianus" as Template for "Paul"

By the same token, why would Jewish slaves found a cult that denigrates Jews and Jewish customs? Why did Job's friends advise that he curse his God and die? After the destruction of Judea, Israel, Jerusalem, the temple, Samaria, etc... there likely became many disillusioned Job's. Clearly a fractio...

Re: "Mucianus" as Template for "Paul"

To be continued - It's tough being old. CW You clearly have a commendably broad and yet at the same time seemingly (to me) narrowly agenda focused understanding of the historicity of the time period of early Christianity. Exceedingly well beyond my knowledge of the time. But why would a dominant po...
