Re: Marcion’s Gospel and the New Testament: Catalyst or Consequence?

If the Marcionite Gospel is seen as an alteration of Luke, it has almost no relevance for the New Testament ... On the other hand, the priority of the Marcionite Gospel promotes the most noble and important task of scholarship: it poses a whole new set of questions that did not exist before. And if...

Re: back to the drawing board? the missing sondergut Marcion

One reason that I haven't already just gone with (1)/(3) is that I'm not sure we have a good catalog of non-Luke that could be in Marcion's gospel. Prior scholarship generally takes the Gospel of Luke as a "map in hand" with which to discover the context of references to Marcion's gospel. ...

back to the drawing board? the missing sondergut Marcion

As some know, I have been exploring the idea that Marcion's gospel wasn't nearly as close to a twin of Luke as people think. And since people often think it's a pretty close twin in most respects, that's low hanging fruit really. The evidence prompting a re-evaluation on this point includes the Matt...

Re: Let's help biblical scholars - Paul's letters

Asia Minor could be the location of the collection with Ephesians. Someone with money and an affinity for Paul are simple, plausible assumptions. There's more unknown about history than is known. Overdetermining the identity of the publisher here is not necessarily helpful.

Re: Let's help biblical scholars - Paul's letters

Where were these three fakes added? Colossians + the other seven could have been written by Paul. Things like 2 Cor may have been properly split up at this point. Ephesians could have been written in the first century with access to those 8, and that edition became the archetype (from which all Pau...

Re: are these supposed to be sound arguments?

The Christ that Harnack sees, looking back through nineteen centuries of Catholic darkness, is only the reflection of a Liberal Protestant face, seen at the bottom of a deep well. (George Tyrrell, Christianity at the Crossroads (London and New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1909), 44) Not just Harnac...

Re: Whoa, whoa -- easy there, chief.

I am well aware that 'interpolations happen' -- but I 'very much doubt' (to put it politely) those here claiming competency to re-write the NT based on their own hunches* from Sunday School readings the KJV, sorry. *re: Marcionite Conspiracy Theories. Subtext at its finest! Who's the target? Who ca...

Re: Let's help biblical scholars - Paul's letters

3 possibilities: 1) the earliest collection of Paulines was an epistolary pseudepigraph 2) the earliest collection of Paulines combined one or more letters originally by Paul (and maybe some not) 3) the earliest collection of Pauline letters was arranged by Paul himself At least a couple advantages ...

Re: are these supposed to be sound arguments?

Smith had been previously searching manuscripts. At Mar Saba he went to catalog books not manuscripts, though not a librarian nor bibliographer? And just happened to find a manuscript in a book near his last day? Coincidence? What are you trying to say? What do you mean by "At Mar Saba he went...
