Re: Is anything historical in Acts 2:14-38?
I wonder if characters like Peter reflect 2nd century scenarios more than 1st century ones.

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
This is well stated - Here are some of the reasons I suspect a specifically Apellean provenance for the original GJohn: GJohn is a significantly different from the Synoptic gospels. Apelles — in contrast to Marcion who was accused of for the most part of cutting out parts of a synoptic gospel -- was...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
Notice the parallel with the Pauline canon. The Muratorian order: To the Corinthians (51) first, to the Ephesians second, to the Philippians third, (52) to the Colossians fourth, to the Galatians fifth, (53) to the Thessalonians sixth, to the Romans (54-5) seventh. Our order takes the last epistle ...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
... I'd love to hear from anyone else giving us an example of a shorter and longer version of a text in early Christianity where the longer text is acknowledged to be the most original. My bet is that we can't find one (i.e. we can't find an example of large sections being 'cut out' of a given text...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
So I entered into this from the consensus position – one that neither Delafosse nor Loisy contested -- namely that the middle recension was authentic. At various points while writing the series I did consult the Syriac versions, but nothing I found there ever led me question the consensus regarding...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
I thought most people accepted that anonymous is invariably a sign of originality. But not in this case. I find it far more believable that someone took an anonymous epistle broke it up and made it into many. This is what I think happened with the Pastorals FWIW. There are authentic nuggets in this...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
.... Let's start with the Syriac 'abridgment.' It's not a fucking abridgment!!!! WTF is the matter with people? Here I lay out this fact: http://stephanhuller.blogspot.com/p/short-syriac-text-ignatius-who-is.html It's ridiculous to assume that some asshole decided to take stuff from the Catholic te...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
There is no need to get personal, regardless. ... I may have insane opinions but they are well researched - like down to the finding the obscurest surviving reference - and then my lack of judgment leads me to the wrong conclusions ... Your 'lack of judgement' leads to you not always being able to ...

Re: Apelles and the gospel of John.
The 'multiple year ministry' business that is inserted into the Gospel of John for instance. That comes from Irenaeus or his tradition. It is obvious from Adv Haer 2. Irenaeus needs Jesus to live to 49. This wasn't likely Apelles's concern and the Marcionites as well as everyone else undoubtedly ha...
