Re: Papias and the disciples of the Lord.

Could Eusebius account appear disjointed because he is lifting two different lines from two different documents of Papias and is joining them together for thoroughness and accuracy? Without going into the casing of Greek words, could not the plain language suggest that Papias was trying to distingui...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

You seem to imply that these issues are all "settled" and that this 100 year old article is now canonical law unless otherwise disproved. Laughable. OF COURSE the Nag Hammadi discovery transformed our understanding of Gnostic Christianity. It's BIZZARE to think it wouldn't have. And.... :...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

1. There are many Gnostic works attributed to Thomas. It is very doubtful that the one you are referring to is the same one Hippolytus, Origen, and Eusebius were referring to. Even so, The Gospel of Thomas a.k.a. The Secret Sayings of Jesus , neither supports or contradicts the doctrine of Gnosticis...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

All what I was trying to do is point out the main cause of the historical battle between Christianity and Gnosticism. The battle is well documented and settled. If you want to continue to go on a fools errand in trying to convince others (or perhaps yourself) that a peculiar case ending of a Greek w...

Re: The Documentary Hypothesis in the 21st Century

The documentary hypothesis is dead I guess I missed the funeral. Where/when/why did the four-document hypothesis of Julius Wellhausen go wrong? Your link is not in English. Do you have an English version of your compelling alternative to J,E,D, and P? Thanks in advance, John T http://mb-soft.com/be...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

. I find the history/origins of Gnosticism complicated but very revealing in how people saw their geocentric universe. Modern science, i.e. astronomy, has all but debunked any remaining doubt that Gnosticism is pseudo-intellectual and trusts exclusively in magic. We can argue later the real motives...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

In answer to number #4. The heresiological sources available to us are not the original sources for that material. Since context matters for understanding ideas it is of deep significance for instance whether the Marcosians really were originally reported to be a sect of Valentinus, whether certain...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

Do you not find it a bit disingenuous that modern scholars question the integrity of Papias claims of association with Aristion and John.... I am not questioning the integrity of Papias' claims here. Nor is Bauckham. What is on the table is what Papias claimed . And, in the very fragment upon which...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

This is what Richard Bauckham has to say about this topic in Jesus and the Eyewitnesses . Bear in mind that Bauckham is wringing Papias for every precious drop of his historical worth as a testifier to the early stages of Christianity: Since Aristion and John the Elder were disciples of the Lord wh...

Re: Valens/Valentinus, Flora/Florinus and Marcus/Marcianus

That Papias knew John is attested. I dispute this as an established fact. Papias' own words seem to imply that he heard from intermediaries who reported what John (the elder) was saying, not that he himself heard from or even personally knew John (the elder): But whenever someone arrived who had be...
