Re: Pilate as Adam ?
the last word on Barabbas is not the midrash based on the two goats of Leviticus 16, but the anti-Marcionite polemic in its purest form ( docet Stahl/Couchoud ). You have two sacrificial offerings. One is sacrificed for the for the atonement of sins, the other released. It's clearly based on Leviti...

Re: Did common early Christians know much of the gospel narratives?
But Mark never establishes that Peter or the disciples ever "got it" after Jesus' death. The robed young man instructs the women to tell Peter and the others to meet Jesus in Galilee, but "they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid." The disciples never learn of Jesus' re...

Re: Did common early Christians know much of the gospel narratives?
As for the presentation of Peter and the other disciples in Mark, they simply didn't understand Jesus' suffering and dying philosophy until after his death. Even Jesus' family are presented as thinking he was out of his mind. He seems crazy to me too. But we know from Paul and 1 Peter that Peter &q...

Re: Pilate as Adam ?
I don't think the Barabbas story was included to establish any parallels between Pilate and Adam. The inclusion of Jesus Barabbas, a doppelganger, was to establish a parallel between Jesus' atoning sacrifice and the ritual of Yom Kippur. Two goats, equal in sacrificial worth, are presented to the co...

Re: All Instances of IC in the Dialogue - first try?
But the above, the Justin stuff, would be the first attempt to historicise their Jesus and "wrap him in old", and perhaps they had no other choice - the original story has a strong Judaic and Judean setting to it and it would be illogical to try to affix him to Egyptian, Hellenic or Roman...

Re: Did common early Christians know much of the gospel narratives?
I go by the idea that Mark and Matthew existed by Papias' time (who I date to c. 115 CE) and that both were written some time after or around 70 CE. And since Papias says Mark was a follower of Peter and based his gospel on his preaching, I figure some kind of pre-"gospel narrative" exist...

Re: Question: Was Theudas seditious or pacifist?
This might lead one to the mythicist conclusion that the gospel accounts are wholly fictional narratives crafted around the fulfillment of various scriptures. I disagree with this perspective because the "fulfillment" of prophecies in the NT tend to be ham-fisted and forced. here is where...

Re: Question: Was Theudas seditious or pacifist?
Well, his disciples having swords appears to be at least part of it, since that's the context of his citation of Is. 53:12. I think Jesus just wanted (or is presented as wanting) to symbolically appear to be like violent Fourth Philosophers by appearing to be associated with "transgressors&quo...

Re: Nothing Sums Up the Essential Nonsense of Religion Better Than This
"The issue with using 'We' is that it is not the community that baptizes a person, rather, it is Christ, and Him alone, who presides at all of the sacraments, and so it is Christ Jesus who baptizes." In that case, isn't the language of the ritual itself incorrect? The priest says " I...
