Re: Making sense of the Pauline Epistles
Although scholars today do not generally associate Marcion with a Gnostic movement, it seems fair to presume that this was not the prevailing opinion of the proto-Orthodox. It may be a matter of terminology. The proto-Orthodox saw Marcion as part of a broader heretical tradition large parts of whic...

Re: A "Messianic" Use of Chrestos in Against Celsus
Anyone can see David is not in the epistles or pastorals It as actually possible to simplifiy this - The gospels and Acts are Davidic and the rest isn't, bar Revelation of course Anyone can see the Jesus of the gospels has a long shot of being the Messiah if he is really masterful at it. It's at le...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously
I think we may have to clarify what exactly a Hellenistic origin for the Pentateuch means. I agree that the present canonical form of the MT of the Pentateuch is Hellenistic, not just in trivial points but in that the detailed chronology of the MT which is important in final form exegesis is Hellen...

Epiphanius accepted our Epistle of James.

The Ebionite work he refers to must be something different....the catholic epistles of James, Peter, John and Jude...

Re: Origen Identifies Jesus as One of the Men at Sodom?
FWIW Justin claims that Christ was one of the three men who appeared to Abraham to Judge Sodom.

Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously
Here is a crux of the matter. I raised it in another discussion in relation to the Flood narrative in Genesis. Imagine a redactor, R, familiar with source A. R discovers a second source, B, about the same event. R has a certain ideological viewpoint that A has illustrated in some fashion. B does no...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously
One General issue is that the works in the Old Testament that would often be regarded as early Hellenistic like Chronicles are revising an earlier pre-Hellenistic text (Samuel-Kings) in the light of later ideology. (Yes this does treat Samuel-Kings as pre-Hellenistic but it does IMO seem considerab...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era .... Part 2
... what evidence is there for the conquest of Canaan? One city's fall is hardly evidence of a conquest of Canaan as per the Bible. I think it's a piece of solid evidence because the archaeology of Jericho matches the unique description of the city's fall in the Book of Joshua. Titus Kennedy also s...

Re: Why the Hellenistic era for ALL "Old Testament" books should be taken seriously
Other parts of the Hebrew Bible which are IMO probably from the exilic or Persian period seem to know the Pentateuch or some form of proto-Pentateuch Without knowing what works you are referring to I am unable to think this one through. Kings, Deutero-Isaiah, Haggai, Nehemiah would be examples. I'm...
