Re: Even Joseph Turmel concluded that Matthew had falsified *Ev

Just thinking through this: 1. Marcion claims to have the original Gospel preached by Paul. Creator God of Judaism is not the true God. No attribution to the Gospel other than perhaps 'Paul'. 2. Proto-orthodox then take that Gospel, assign attribution to Luke, a follower of Paul, and then add 'Judai...

Re: Even Joseph Turmel concluded that Matthew had falsified *Ev

But how is that possible? The argument is as follows: 1. Marcion knew the fourfold gospel (i.e. a set of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) 2. Marcion for some reason (it is never explained) "chose Luke to falsify" I don't even think this is a serious suggestion. Surely a motive has to be give...

Re: The Death of Christianity, Atheism and New False Gods

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/ar-BB1kZdRj What a silly article. "Not since the road to Damascus has there been a more notable spiritual volte-face than the one made on LBC this week. Having spent a career breathing threats against the disciples of the Lord, a certain Richard Dawkins is ...

Re: The Short Recension of Three Letters of Ignatius

You've cherry-picked but one of several points that Cureton made in that preface. Read the other points. In the book (coz I haven't reproduced them that well, if at all). True enough, I'm cherry-picking one of several points. I'm looking forward to reading more on the analysis about the primacy of ...

Re: The Short Recension of Three Letters of Ignatius

"We can hardly suppose that the Syriac translator...should have made such omissions for the sake of brevity, more especially when these Epistles in themselves are so short." No doubt Cureton was more knowledgeable than I'll ever be, but surely this is an argument from incredulity. There a...

Re: Important milestones in biblical scholarship

Ken's already mentioned it earlier in this thread, but the "New Perspective on Paul", started by EP Sanders; and also the Context Group: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Perspective_on_Paul The "new-perspective" movement is closely connected with a surge of recent scholarly inte...

Re: re; re: reeeeeeee

Who cares whether it's evidence for historicity or not. It's all fan fiction anyway. You appeared to care whether the Ignatian Letters were evidence for Jesus' 'historicity' last night (among your apparent concern about the argument that the Short Recension is very unlikely to be a later truncation...

Re: references to Paul and Peter in the Ignatian Epistle to the Romans

But "... one could argue that a later redactor, again, perhaps at the end of the second century, added in [the] references to the gospels and Paul [to] root Ignatius in the tradition of the Apostles and Paul, while at the same time providing an early witness to the canonical texts." 1 htt...

Re: re; re: reeeeeeee

1. Recent, as-yet-to-be-published scholarship (which I am privy to), puts what I think is a very good case that the Syriac Short Recension of Three Letters that we know about through William Cureton were, in fact, the original Ignatian letters (or reflect original Ignatian Letters), ie., the Ignati...

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus

Looking into this, if only for my own interest: 1. The long recessions were found in Greek and Latin manuscripts. There are 13 epistles, 6 regarded as spurious. 2. The middle recessions were found in Greek manuscripts in the 17th C by Archbishop James Ussher. There are 7 epistles, which matches the ...
