Re: Tertullian's Praescriptione = Irenaeus's προστάγμασι

After several hours of fact checking the links Secret Alias provided that purportedly confirms his theory that Tertullian either made up the story about Marcion's repentance and/or Tertullian can't be trusted because he plagiarized from Irenaeus, I find wanting for the lack of evidence to say the le...

Re: Adversus Marcionem Book 1 Comes from Irenaeus

Parenthetically, it is clear that T had a detailed knowledge of" Irenaeus' work, for he also cites or quotes 24 Irenaeus in Adv. Marc. l and often in De an. https://books.google.com/books?id=-UlFAAAAIAAJ&q=%22Adversus+Valentinianos%22+Irenaeus&dq=%22Adversus+Valentinianos%22+Irenaeus&a...

Re: The Pattern of Church Fathers Recycling Older Material

Thanks. And we might want to also consider that this pattern of appropriation/forgery extends to the gospels. One of my first questions in this field was "how did Christians not notice that Matthew and Luke were forgeries of Mark?" Maybe that's the point. The synoptic pattern sanctified t...

Re: The Pattern of Church Fathers Recycling Older Material

My complaint is really about Tert's death-bed conversion claim. Tert's "prescription against heretics" is heavily based on Irenaeus, yet Irenaeus doesn't make this claim. Its obvious Tert made it up, despite most of the rest of what he says coming straight from Irenaeus (except of course ...

Re: Temple locations

The "Well of Souls" is such a powerful feature and fixed point of the Temple Mount that it is almost inconceivable the Temple could have been anyplace else. Still, it has been said the Well of Souls has not been explored since the Knights of Templar paved over the floor with marble slabs, ...

Re: Tertullian said Marcion later professed repentance

To be fair, if someone thinks that some watered-down paint-by-numbers don't-make-my-head-hurt approach is going to unscramble the mess that is the literary remains of Christianity in antiquity, they are the most deluded of us all. Actually, I don't see the writings of Ante-Nicene Fathers a mess. Cy...

Re: Tertullian said Marcion later professed repentance

Way too much to read and such a complicated theory by Secret Alias. It is hard for me to follow his complex line of thinking. Perhaps someone else can verify if I understand the Secret Alias theory correctly. Although Irenaeus, a contemporary of Marcion goes on and on (yada, yada, yada) about the fa...

Re: Tertullian said Marcion later professed repentance

Tertullian just copied out stuff Irenaeus wrote, copied out stuff Justin wrote, copied out stuff Theophilus wrote - modifying it with little flourishes or transposition. Yep, sounds about right but that doesn't make it fake news. However, for the sake of argument, if Tertullian was not aware that h...

Re: Tertullian said Marcion later professed repentance

It is worth noting that Eznik says that the Marcionites held that after the just god crucified Jesus (the unknown good god) he professed repentance. This is the likely germ from which the Tettullian story grew. The Lord of the Jews, the Lord of the Marcionites as above so below. https://books.googl...

Re: Tertullian said Marcion later professed repentance

For those who don't want to take the time to research how this truncated/edited and censored thread came to be (I did not create the original O.P. or this ad hoc thread), I will repeat what Tertullian wrote about Marcion, one last time. Please remember, I did not claim/imply nor did Tertullian claim...
