Re: Chrestians/Christians?

Compare to this transcription. The word XRISTOU (the genitive from of Christos ) appears five times in the transcription, in lines 4, 10,19, 20, and 28. I could not make out the Iota and Sigma in XRISTOU in line 4 very clearly because of the two dark lines over it which I take to be shadows, but I ...

Re: Have any scholars suggested that both passages about Jesus from Josephus were forgeries but Josephus mentioned Jesus

The investigation of the "negative" tone of Josephus (see Bermejo Rubio), the variants such as the Slavonic Josephus (see Eisler), and/or the parallels in other passages in Josephus (Clyde Pharr, Bammel, Albert Bell) tend to be jumping off points. Hi Peter, Thanks for the kind wors (in yo...

Re: Have any scholars suggested that both passages about Jesus from Josephus were forgeries but Josephus mentioned Jesus

If so, who and when? Graham H. Twelftree, 'Jesus in Jewish Traditions', in Gospel Perspectives , Volume 5, The Jesus Tradition Outside the Gospels , edited by David Wenham (Sheffield: JSOT Press, 1984) 289-41. Twelftree discusses the phrase 'James the brother of Jesus who was called Christ" fr...

Re: Matthean posteriority: Peter's parallel confession in Mark, Luke, Matthew and John

What I see in these synoptic passages is that the text goes from : "you are the Christ" to "the Christ of God" and to "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Mark again seems the most primitive of the three. And Luke seems to lighten Matthew's sentence. Sinouh...

Re: Matthean posteriority: Peter's parallel confession in Mark, Luke, Matthew and Joh

But Jesus, turning and looking at His disciples, rebuked Peter and said (καὶ λέγει) [καὶ λέγει to Satan? to His disciples? to Peter?] https://biblehub.com/greek/legei_3004.htm Is this ambiguity not very striking? Every other time Mark uses καὶ λέγει it is followed by an explicit indirect object (wh...

Re: What if Josephus wrote the "Gospel of Mark "

I made a comment about this in ,the other thread about Roman Provenance, but wanted to call it out specifically here. I'm not saying I endorse this position, but I think it should really be given serious consideration. We know that Josephus was writing at the right time. We know he wrote in Greek. ...

Re: Matthean Posteriority: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem" (Did Lukan redaction influence Matthew 23:37?)

At min. 27:30f of this Mythvision interview, Allen Garrow talks about how Matthew changes Luke. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ataTSjxxVs Matt. is against luke's law free gospel, Matt. edits out female autonomy, Matt. addresses a male audience, a richer audience, Matt turns down the dial on sayin...

Re: Matthean Posteriority: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem" (Did Lukan redaction influence Matthew 23:37?)

At min. 56, Goodacre said: "What Allen Garrow says is that when Matthew is distracted by other material, you end up with lower verbatim agreement. That is a very important part of the NTS article..." Here is a quotation from the NTS article: "The Matthew Conflator Hypothesis(MCH)argu...

Re: Matthean Posteriority: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem" (Did Lukan redaction influence Matthew 23:37?)

. That doesn't seem so clear to me. What does 'that' refers to here? 1) I also think that Matthew's use of Ἰερουσαλήμ seems, at first glance, to be a good argument for his dependence on Luke. On the other hand, Paul proves that different usage can be meaningful and intentional, and Matthew could th...

Re: Matthean Posteriority: "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem" (Luke 13:34–35 influenced Matthew 23:37–39)

Re: The shift in usage of both forms for Jerusalem in Luke-Acts "According to Wehnert, Die Reinheit, 34–35, the shift in usage of both forms for Jerusalem in Luke-Acts is not random. Luke always uses Ἰερουσαλὴµ in direct speeches that are delivered by Jews, followers of Jesus or so-called God-...
