Re: The Meaning of 'Apostolic'

https://www.studylight.org/lexicons/greek/649.html -- note the Hebrew equivalents are not those you select above https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostle Seems to be much more related to ambassador (weak IMO, as πρεσβεύω is different root) or envoy/emissary (stronger IMO), as one sent out apart (ἀπὸ), ...

Re: Many will come in my name.

Why is the following motif doubled in Mark 13? Mark 13.5-6 (before anything else in the discourse): 5 And Jesus began to say to them, "See to it that no one misleads you. 6 Many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,' and will mislead many." Mark 13.21-22 (after the abomination of desola...

Re: The Meaning of 'Apostolic'

The Christian sense is a bit different than the Jewish. Apostle (ἀπόστολος) in the earliest days seems to have been interchangeable with bishop (ἐπισκοπός) and (great) teacher/minister (διακονίας). Acts 1:20 refers to the replacement of Judas as one of the twelve Apostles by referring to Psalm (LXX ...

Re: Sources for Simon bar Kokhba.

On Ben's comment about the fortress being adjacent (almost) to the temple. If you look at a map of the Gihon Springs and imagine a Temple just slightly north, that would place very close to the southern tip of the Temple Mount (Antonia). It would also be in a location where Herod could look down fro...

Re: Irenaeus on Galatians 2:1 ... "again" present or missing?

It is also missing in the Marcionite text, per Tertullian 5.3.1, although a paraphrase, and the text in Latin, it is derived from the Greek and early 3rd century - making it the earliest witness (I date Irenaeus a little later, and recognize the Latin text of his works much later and somewhat doctor...

Re: A strange anomaly in Mark 14:41

You assume they held in their earliest moments the same properties we associate with them in later eras, certainly the 4th century onward, but possibly earlier in the 3rd and some argue the 2nd centuries (evidence is very dicey and for much earlier than the end of the 2nd and start of the 3rd centu...

Re: A strange anomaly in Mark 14:41

I'm of the opinion that all of the Gospels were stage type performances. I can't accept this. The original point of the Gospel, Evangelium, was as a new Torah, and was not be performed, but used as a means of study and revelation. Now plays may have been inspired by the Evangelium (similar to Ezeki...

Re: A strange anomaly in Mark 14:41

Ben, Notice how I parsed it. The Gospel(s) started life as plays, but evolved into literature. I agree Mark is well into the second stage, and it was self aware, e.g., 13:14 ὁ ἀναγινώσκων νοείτω [1]. But it was built upon a prototype(s) and that was still in the first stage. The published Gospels we...

Re: A strange anomaly in Mark 14:41

I'm of the opinion that all of the Gospels were stage type performances. Agreed. I wish more people understood this. Much of the mystery of the Gospels would go away, and they could be appreciated for what they are, rather than trying to force them to be something they are not, like memoirs or hist...

Re: The Source of Epiphanius's Alogoi Section

You are truly a nutcase. This is another case of your special pleading of VERY LATE source material to be correct, but only selectively when it fits your assumptions and theories. So a 4th century source, which upon your reading may have drawn from 5th century or later sources, has the original stor...
