Re: The resurrection of the dead as a historical event

Jesus, the most important survivor A following fragment in which rising from the midst of the dead occurs, is Acts 26:23. Here also suffering (without death) is combined with rising/recovery. Acts 26:22-23 go as follows: (22) To this day I have had the help that comes from God, and so I stand here ...

Re: The resurrection of the dead as a historical event

I do think it interesting that some early writings (such as 1 Peter, but there are others) seem to focus on the suffering more than on the death. But words cannot express how much I disagree with your overall answer to the question. Approaches differ, I suppose. Yes, Ben, approaches differ, but it’...

Ancient Greece indeed.

Re: The Importance of John 11+

Above I forgot something important about Eleazar. He was not only the one who offended Rome by ending the sacrifices from foreigners in the Temple, he also committed a war crime against a Roman army unit. Under his command the Roman garrison in Jerusalem was slaughtered after their safe retreat had ...

Re: The Importance of John 11+

The story of the raising of Lazarus can be read as a historical, non-mythological story of the war years. FJV has stated something of EXTREME IMPORTANCE here. FJV is correct. Mr Wilson, thank you for this new thread. During my research I found a lot of converging evidence that the Gospels are a vei...

Re: Time Shift scenarios and the New Testament texts

Everything I can find states he grew up in Galilee and was a Zealot and was shunned by the High Priesthood. Do I have him confused with someone else? Outhouse, I am very interested in your source that Eleazar son of Ananias grew up in Galilee. If this information is correct, it throws supplementary...

Re: The resurrection of the dead as a historical event

1 Peter 3.18 in its entirety: 18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death [ θανατωθεὶς ] in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.... I am well aware of 3:18, as I have shown above. You give the whole verse, bu...

Re: The resurrection of the dead as a historical event

When you attempt an analysis of this type you must check how the terminology is used elsewhere before positing alternative meanings. Look at Mk 9:9,10, 12:25, Lk 20:35, 24:46, Jn 20:9, 1 Peter 1:3. Is there any doubt in these examples what ανιστημι εκ νεκρων means? Can you find any clear examples w...

Re: Paul’s Jesus --- Man or Myth ?

I think you may be expecting way too much of Paul in terms of consistency. He was often not consistent --- and he sometimes stretched logic to the breaking point. Of course, an inconsistent Paul is much more interesting than a consistent one. I believe Paul was utterly consistent in propagating a f...

Re: The resurrection of the dead as a historical event

The Quadratus fragment The Quadratus fragment in Eusebius goes as follows: But the works of our saviour were always present, for they were real: those who were healed (οι θεραπευθεντες), those who rose from the dead (οι ανασταντες εκ νεκρων). We did not only see them get better and recover, but the...
