Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

I can understand that if the word ‘rock’ was used in Mk 4:5 and 16 there could be a link to Peter (rock), but it seems that the word used is 'rocky places'. In Mk 4:18 the Greek word εισιν is used which I understand is the third person plural not singular, which makes it unlikely that one person su...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

As rgprice has not responded to my writing that he hadn’t put forward in this thread his case about the parable of the sower I have looked in the other thread he provided a link to. One does have to be very careful with this type of speculation, for sure. But there are reasons to justify it. Are the...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

And I think whoever wrote the first Gospel … the basis of their narrative, in which they described Jesus descending from heaven to take on a disguise, which is why the Gospel of Mark has Jesus trying to hide his identity. Where does Mark describe Jesus as descending from heaven? As for the descent ...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

Carrier discussing 1 Cor 15:12-22. Paul talking about Jesus being born “of a woman.” . . . I argue that this occurs in a speech … about how Jesus’s incarnation saves us, by taking us out of one realm (of flesh) and anchoring us in another (of heaven). Key to Paul’s entire argument is that Jesus had...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

I think Ascension of Isaiah tells something like the oldest version of the story: https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/ascension.html … And I think whoever wrote the first Gospel that we recognize knew of a story like this and it was the basis of their narrative, in which they described Jesu...

Re: Dr. Sarah's Friendly Refutation of all Mythicism

But this goes back to my bigger point on the Pauline letters. The idea that we can argue for historicity of Jesus based on certain passages in the Pauline letters is entirely wrong to begin with. We know, with a very high degree of certainty, that the canonical Pauline letters have been revised by ...

Re: Three stages of the incarnation of Jesus

... Now to me, this progression seems quite logical. The orthodox claim is that the account of Jesus began with what I call the third stage and then "degenerated" to what I call the second and first stages. But it seems to me that moving in this direction makes far less theological sense....
