Re: Pontius Pilate, Ponticus, and Propaganda

Not only is the usual date for the arrival of Pontius Pilate in Judea questionable - there are also historical problems with his removal from office. Daniel Schwartz: Studies in the Jewish Background to Christianity: Pontius Pilate's Suspension from Office: Chronology and Sources T h e P r o b l e m...

Re: Pontius Pilate, Ponticus, and Propaganda

... As demonstrated by Daniel Schwartz, Pilate was in Judea from 18 c.e. to 36/37 c.e. - approximately 19 or so years, an unusually long period of time. Livius says otherwise re Pilates starting year and tenure - Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor of Judaea from 26 CE to 36 CE; in this capacity,...

Pilate's tenure - did it begin AD 18 or 26?

<snip> So, to put a hypothesis out there plainly, I would like to suggest that the stereotyped phrase "before Pontius Pilate" in connection with Jesus' suffering and death found in second century writing connected with the Roman church had a certain propaganda value. Without actually nami...

Re: Lena Einhorn - A Shift In Time

The simple answer is that the gospel story is a condensing of Jewish/Hasmonean history I agree there is some condensation present in the gospels, but I doubt if this condensation has something to do with the Hasmoneans. Instead there are indications that the gospels have been written by an anti-Has...

Re: Lena Einhorn - A Shift In Time

. Carrier has posted a 2nd comment by Lena E below his blog-post about her book. This is the direct link to it - http://www.richardcarrier.info/archives/11048#comment-17619 Lena asks a number of interesting rhetorical questions, such as (out of order) - "Why would they [the Gospel authors] spe...

MrMacSon wrote: However, I don't understand how you can say - Not only does the time shift theory suggest that Jesus really existed, in the flesh, it also suggests that his life and movement is described in detail also outside the New Testament texts; i.e. it suggests there is corroborating evidenc...

Re: Lena Einhorn - A Shift In Time

Lena, once one opts for a time-shift scenario one opens up the debate prior to as well as post the 30s c.e. Not necessarily. Really? What is good for the goose is good for the gander.....once the time-shift premise is entertained one cannot decide to place ones arbitrary restrictions upon it's use....

Re: Lena Einhorn - A Shift In Time

Carrier posted my comment to his review today (and his comment to my comment): http://www.richardcarrier.info/archives/11048 Richard Carrier: The evidence equally supports dozens of contradictory theories of what happened. The consequence is simply: we cannot know any of those hypotheses is more tr...
