Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark
One thing to keep in mind was the Roman incentive to see Jesus as the Messiah. The orthodox view was that Jesus fulfilled messianic prophecy. As such, this voided the Jewish expectation of a future messiah. Since Jesus was the Messiah, this should put an end to Jewish expectations of any coming war...

2 Corinthians 2.14-15 2.14 But thanks be to God, who in [Christ] always leads us in triumph, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of [Christ] to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, 16 to one a fragrance f...

Anointing in Paul: 2 Corinthians 1.21-22 and 2.14-16.
I think there is some evidence in 2 Corinthians that Paul used the word Christ to describe [Jesus] and that the nomen sacrum Chi-Sigma overline (with different endings according to case) was used to abbreviate Christ. 2 Corinthians 1.21-22: 1.21 But it is God who establishes us with you in [Christ],...

Anointed as a verb with Jesus as its object in Luke and Acts in Codex Sinaiticus
I'm not sure if anyone is currently contesting that the Evangelists thought Jesus was the Christ and that the nomen sacrum XS/N/U overline was an abbreviation for abbreviation for Christos (or Christ or Anointed, meaning Messiah). I've already discussed John 1.41 and John 4.25 in which the word mess...

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark
This does raise an important issue. The Pauline letters really make no case at all that Jesus was a "messiah" or "king", even a celestial or universal king. The closest thing is identifying him as a high priest in Hebrews. This needs some qualification. 1 Corinthians 15.24-55 ha...

Re: Anti-Good vs Anti-Messiah?
The evidence of Codex Sinaiticus points the other way: ἀντίχριστος is written out every time it occurs and uses an Iota, no an Eta (1 John 22.19, 2.22. 4.3; 2 John 7). 1 John 2.22 is particularly revealing: 22 τιϲ εϲτιν ο ψευϲτηϲ ει μη ο αρνουμενοϲ οτι ιϲ ουκ εϲτιν ο χϲ ουτοϲ εϲτιν ο αντιχριϲτοϲ ο α...

Re: Josephus Ant. 18.63-64 and 20.200 as quoted in Eusebius HE per Parisinus Grec 1431
These are screenshots of the two versions of the passage about James the brother of Jesus who was called the Christ in Eusebius HE 2.23, which Eusebius attributes to Josephus. The first of these is not found in our manuscripts of Josephus and it is widely held that Eusebius took the passage from ori...
