Re: Disagreements between Luke and the Acts.

Actually, Theophilus is the scantily-clad youth in Mark 14:51.

Re: Is Romans 9:5 a late catholic interpolation?

Grammatically Paul calling Jesus theos is preferable, as argued earlier. So the context is there, the grammar is there; the only remaining objection seems to be that Paul doesn't do this elsewhere. But he does. The blatant application in Philippians 2:10 of Isaiah 45 esp v23 is one such place. The ...

Re: Disagreements between Luke and the Acts.

The most famous instance of a disagreement between Luke and Acts may be the ascension: in Luke it appears to occur on the same day as the resurrection, whereas in Acts it famously occurs 40 days after the resurrection. What other examples are there? Ben. Was delighted to find this thread. I’ve been...

Re: Paul and the Vision of Isaiah

Could Peter and Paul be but two aspects of Simon Magus? Perhaps something akin to the two sides of a coin. Isn't there a Patristic reference to Simon being OK with being called by just about any name one wishes to label him by? I don't know necessarily that anyone consciously conceived of Peter as ...

Re: Is Romans 9:5 a late catholic interpolation?

Not so much "Jew first, but also the Greek", but more "Natural/flesh first, but really the spiritual". Yes Paul has a flesh/spirit theology across many passages. But are you saying that Paul is not primarily talking in Romans 9-11 about the Jewish people as constituted under the...

Re: First Corinthians 10 (and just a bit of 11)

Since the apostle is referring to a provision of the Torah (Leviticus 6, the priest eats the sacrifice), I take “Israel according to the flesh” as a reference to Israel under the Torah; i.e., not Herod’s temple per se. I’m not a Torah expert, but I think most sacrificial meat is/was reserved for the...

Re: Is Romans 9:5 a late catholic interpolation?

So, on textural grounds, it is not high on the list of likely scribal interpolations. Elsewhere in his book, Walker says that hardly any of the likely interpolations have strong manuscript support. Your second sentence cancels out the first. The likelihood of interpolation (or secondary/editorial a...

Re: Is Romans 9:5 a late catholic interpolation?

It is worth pondering that almost every affirmation made in 9:4-5 of the distinctiveness of the Jews has its contrary/contrast elsewhere in the epistle: to the Israelites belongs the adoption as sons For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (8:14) It is not the children...

Re: Is Romans 9:5 a late catholic interpolation?

The best known (and simplest) conjectural emendation is instead of ὁ ὢν to read ὧν ὁ In this case one would translate whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, theirs [the Jews] is God over all blessed forever. Amen. i.e. God is in a special sense the God of the Jew...

Re: Is Romans 9:5 a late catholic interpolation?

The text calls Christ God. Because this statement is genuinely un-Pauline, and most likely a mimicry of 2 Corinthians 11:31 and/or Romans 1:25 and/or the LXX Psalms… An alternative theory is that all three of these NT doxologies are from the pen of the same late editor(s). All three would have take...
