Ante-Nicene Pilgrimage Sites

Origen says, around 248 CE, that a cave 'at Bethlehem' was being shown as the location of the birth of Jesus: http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/04161.htm With respect to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, if any one desires, after the prophecy of Micah and after the history recorded in the Gospels by t...

Messiah != Son of God

This is an interesting bit. In the earliest Christian writings (presumably Paul), 'Christ Jesus' and 'the Son of God' are equated fairly breezily.** In the third century, Origen wants to let us know that this is not something the Jews say about the Christ. http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/04161.htm ...

Re: John the Baptist passage authentic

Origen incidentally makes an addition comment regarding the Jews, John, and Jesus: http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/04161.htm And as it is a Jew who, in the work of Celsus, uses the language to Jesus regarding the appearance of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, 'This is your own testimony, unsu...

Re: No pagans denied the unusual birth of Jesus?

In another interesting passage, Origen falls back on the tu quoque fallacy that the church fathers seem to use whenever asked to demonstrate the credibility of their stories: you too tell tales . Interesting that modern apologists are less interested in this approach (perhaps because modern critics ...

Re: Who's the Source, "Luke"? -- A Basic Stylometric Study

Better methods for deciding how to excerpt from the Gospel of Luke, better ways of sampling the other texts (other than taking the entire gospels of Matthew and gospel of Mark as the basis of statistics), or better factors for discrimination than single word frequencies may provide better results. ...

Re: Rank, Raglan, Freud, a Texas Sharpshooter, and Jesus

Apparently Plato was called a son of Apollo in legend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_life_of_Plato According to certain fabulous reports of ancient writers, Plato's mother became pregnant from a divine vision: Ariston tried to force his attentions on Perictione, but failed of his purpose; then ...

Re: Inquiry regarding the Christ hymn of Philippians 2.6-11.

I am on record (both here recently and years ago on the FRDB) as being of the opinion that the most natural referent for the name above all names that was bestowed upon Jesus Christ in the Christ hymn is Jesus itself, since in the very next line it is the name of Jesus at which every knee shall bow...

Re: About a messianic prophecy from the Sibylline Oracles. .

I had an experience today. I have been researching a document which was lost at a monastery somewhere a long time ago. It's been the quest of my life time. I get a hold of someone who has the key to everything. The priest said 'oh I was there when that happened, oh by the way before I continue, are...
