Re: Retcons - continuity by reinterpretation
... I wonder how much history in ancient books are merely the retconning of earlier stories. What percentage of stories of events and people actually occurred? Not much. Most ancient history is probably as accurate as most holy books. Exactly. I read somewhere there is good evidence that the Jonah ...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
The problem, or part of the problem, is, as you have frequently alluded to in the past, the etymology of the name Jesus.Secret Alias wrote:The anger or vehemence comes from being so close yet so far away. It's like the theory ALMOST works. The problem is the name Jesus

Re: Proofs That Jesus Existed
[a] If Jesus did not exist, Christians will create him in the past. Lena Einhorn argued the templates weren't too far in the future - http://lenaeinhorn.se/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Jesus-and-the-Egyptian-Prophet-12.11.25.pdf [c] so it was easy to go back to the future [d] to create him in the rec...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
I'm not sure that Carrier is "..'resolving discrepancies' in serial fictional works" - he is more 'trying to align' disparate aspects of theological works

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
... Carrier seems to have some unusual readings of what Philo and Zech say and then concludes that his strained interpretations match up and are too much for coincidence ... Yes, Carrier has some atypical readings of Philo and Zech, and he is drawing widely and extrapolating to align Zech, Philo, a...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
And to anticipate the stupid response from his followers. No you can't just assume that Philo made the same reckless mistake because it suits the whim of your desires. You have to evidence that he translated Hebrew names in the middle of scriptural passages as Hebrew phrases and then wrote out the ...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
which questions Carrier's translation of a critical section of the Greek text of Zechariah as 'on the head of the high priest Joshua son of “YHWH is just." That translation seems to have been provided by fpvflyer - http://freethoughtblogs.com/carrier/archives/3103/comment-page-1#comment-32323

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
Another question for Carrier and his minions here at the forum. The Hebrew of Zechariah 6:10 is usually translated Then put the crown on the head of Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Carrier apparently translates the passage into English from the Greek (?) as: ... the high priest Joshua son...

This is interesting - http://www.earlywritings.com/forum/view ... f=4&t=1989
retroactive continuity (Retcon) ... is a technique for resolving discrepancies in serial fictional works.
What is less well-known is how well the concept works for various theological apologetics.

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang
I meant: why didn't Philo mention 'the archangel Jesus' adored by the first Christians [such] as Paul. ?? Well, Carrier (+/- others) thinks Philo did introduce the idea of an archangel Jesus; and Carrier thinks Paul was a contemporary of Philo's (and most people think Paul wrote shortly after Philo...
