before? = during Tertullian's time?

or perhaps both -ie. during Tertullian's time and after (?)

Re: Memoirs of the Apostles in Justin's Trypho Dialogue

Tertullian likely didn't write many of his most important treatises. Just look. Against the Valentinians is a reworking of (the treatise behind) Irenaeus's first 12 chapters of Adv Haer (but in a jumbled order!). Against Hermogenes is a reworking of Theophilus's lost treatise of the same name. Agai...

Re: Memoirs of the Apostles in Justin's Trypho Dialogue

I think the canon and the documents that make up the canon were established after many of the surviving treatises [of the Church Fathers] (or parts of [those] surviving treatises) were written. But the process in either case... were set down in their final form in a jumbled form , deliberately obsc...

Re: Memoirs of the Apostles in Justin's Trypho Dialogue

a. there was a single ur-text behind both (i) the version of Against Marcion copied out by Tertullian and (ii) an original text written by Justin? Of course. Andrew agrees too. b. there was (i) an original text written by Justin and (ii) an ur-text behind the version of Against Marcion copied out b...

Re: Other Temples

Good points.

I have wondered if some temple events recorded in ancient BC/BCE Judaism occurred at temples other than 'The Temple'.

Re: Memoirs of the Apostles in Justin's Trypho Dialogue

[quote="Charles Wilson""] Stephen, I would suggest you have the dependencies wrong. The writings in the name of Justin are very likely pse edipigraphic. I think that we have to take this one step at a time. 1. there is a relationship between Against Marcion and Justin Martyr. ... [I,...

Re: Memoirs of the Apostles in Justin's Trypho Dialogue

Yes, the records that survive are largely the records of the victors, but there are also likely hints of pre-victory history too. Saying "by the time we do read about Paul's letters" and "until we suddenly read about ''proto-orthodoxy Christianity's" state of play in the second ...

While I can agree that

I don't follow your previous reasoning -
Charles Wilson wrote:
If "Paul" wrote in the 40s-ish, then there is no reason to construct the Gospels themselves.
If the Gospels were written separately, it would be a non-sequitur.

Re: The woman with the hemorrhage: a political story?

I have good arguments to think that John’s Lazarus is Eleazar son of Ananias, another prominent rebel leader. He was the one who provoked the war by refusing further offerings in favor of the Roman emperor in the Temple in 66 CE. What do you mean by "by refusing offerings in favour of the Roma...
