Re: Wiki EarlyChristian writings Missing from our Forum'sWeb
The Apocalypse of Peter exists partly in Greek in the "Ahmim fragment", and there is a later Arabic copy and an even later Ethiopic copy of the Arabic one. The Early Writings site has the Ahmim fragment and quotes from the relevant portions of the Ethiopic one. The editor, M. James, wrote...

Re: The women didn't fail in Mark 16:8
Larry Hurtado's reading does seem clearly possible, which indicates how deeply ambiguous the ending of Mark at 16:8 is. It seems, from your words, that you are doing the following implication: the LH's reading is possible --> the ending at 16:8 is ambiguous. I agree and accept personally the premis...

Re: Is there a core text of the Testimonium Flavianum?
The text in translation (Agapius Pseudo-Hegesippus) seems particularly uncontrolled. It might be better to limit the discussion to Greek sources only.

Re: "the brothers who were in Pontus": Marcion's? John's? Bo
There's some interesting commentary/discussion by Lightfoot either side of the page that link goes to. On p.850 Lightfoot discusses Papias's mention of a Hebrew version of Matthew, and "the fact that St Matthew's Gospel is not an original but a translation." He then goes on to discuss how...

Re: "the brothers who were in Pontus": Marcion's? John's? Bo
One of the most remarkable (and perhaps one of the most overlooked) things about this passage is the description of the five books of Papias as the "exoteric" books, which confirms a distinction between the "esoteric" and "exoteric" Christian teaching, for Papias, some...

Re: Richard Carrier: Science Education in the Early Roman Em
After noting that science was not a high priority for early Xian theologians, RC pointed out that that can easily explain the decline of science and science education after the 4th cy., when Xianity was made the Roman Empire's official religion. It also did not help that not many people learned Gre...

Re: The Nag Hammadi Library Belonged to Monks
I'm currently reading Images of Rebirth by Hugo Lundhaug. (About the Gospel of Philip and the Exegesis of the Soul ) I still don't find the post-baptismal chrismation in Philip stromg evidence in itself for a late date, but cumulatively I am convinced that the Gospel of Philip in its present form is...

Re: CR Moss: "The Other Christs: [Martyrs] Imitating Jesus .
She first gives an in-depth textual analysis of the martyrological accounts of Stephen and Polycarp. In the former, she argues that Stephen’s forgiving his persecutors actually influenced the portrayal of Christ forgiving his persecutors. In the latter, she states that Polycarp is a conflation of C...
