Re: John 8

Interesting. The YLT doesn't translate it that way. I'd have to defer to someone with more knowledge of Greek and the early manuscripts to assess this. Richmond Lattimore did not carry Young's burden (baggage) of having to see things through the perspective of, and in full conformance to/with estab...

Re: John 8

Richmond Lattimore is highly regarded for his English translations of the Iliad and Odyssey. He knew his way around the Greek language.

Re: John 8

As to the relevant section you quote from John chapter 8, the Richmond Lattimore and April DeConick "literal" translations peak my interest. I believe they both quite independently come to the conclusion (from memory here) that more properly the translations are: "You are of the fathe...

Thank you! The way the two verses are translated, they sound highly Gnostic. I was immediately reminded of "The Gnostic Paul" by Elaine Pagels.

Re: "him who judges justly" is allegory of the demiurge: Pilate

Paul teaches: 'On that cross he discarded the cosmic powers and authorities like a garment.' Paul also reminds initiates who have symbolically died and resurrected with the figure of Jesus: 'Did you not die with Christ and pass beyond the reach of the elemental powers of the cosmos? Would not an event as catastrophic as the destruction of the Temple require the advent of a new order, or new means of worshiping, if not worship itself?

Re: My Lifelong Obsession with Against Marcion

Wouldn't it be ironic to discover that the real Justin was Marcion?
