Re: Jubilee years Luke and the Birth of Jesus

This is what Norman C. Habel has to say about Sabbatical years in The Land is Mine: Six Biblical Land Ideologies (1993): [101] ... THE LAND SABBATH The opening section of Leviticus 25 proposes legislation about a land sabbath for the Israelites (Lev. 25:1-7). That this legislation is intended to pro...

Re: Jubilee years Luke and the Birth of Jesus

If 8/7 BCE is also a Jubilee year (or alternatively 7/6 BCE if the Jubilee was observed on the "fiftieth" year), Why is there any question about the Jubilee being the 50th year? Isn't Leviticus clear? What am I missing here? I was thinking there may have been some ambiguity in Judean scri...

Re: Jubilee years Luke and the Birth of Jesus

Has anyone asked if there is any relationship between the census and a Jubilee year? The idea came to my mind several years ago. There was a sabbatical year from fall of 8 BCE to end of summer 7 BCE, which was significant to me because I was looking at the possibility that the "star" of B...

Re: Jubilee years Luke and the Birth of Jesus

Andrew, It has been my impression, from reading about Jubilee and Sabbatical years, that many critics think that the "Jubilee" year immediately followed the 7th sabbatical year. This would mean that it would be the fiftieth year, i.e., the first year of the next Jubilee cycle. On the other...

Re: Co-evolution

I seem to be working from a sort of evolutionary theory of history! It is quite interactive - x meets y leading to z but both x and y are also changed. Classic examples are by the rivers of Babylon and the septuagint. I would argue that the New World was a very significant change point - OK, things...

Paul-Louis Couchoud 62 I know this is only tangentially related, but that author also postulated the gospel of Mark was written in Latin: http://www.radikalkritik.de/Couch_latMarc_trnsl.htm I'm not necessarily endorsing any of these folks. What I did recall was that BeDuhn discussed the possibility...

Re: Texts on the construction of Luke (esp how 1:1-2:52 rela

Long ago, when I was reading on Luke, I noted that a number of scholars were of the view that the birth narrative was additive after the gospel was written. Sadly I can find a good references to that view. I have seen the idea touted by Raymond Brown in Birth of the Messiah , but he doesn't footnot...

Re: Does anyone have On the Historicity of Jesus yet?

You mean Appian, Civil Wars , book 2, chapter 20 (sect 145)? "It seems to me, fellow-citizens, that this deed is not the work of human beings, but of some evil spirit. ἔοικεν, ὦ πολῖται, τὰ γεγενημένα ἀνδρῶν μὲν οὐδενός, ἀλλά του δαιμόνων ἔργα εἶναι. (the English translation above is that of Ho...
