Re: Vinny's Jesus Agnostic Blog

What Latin support is that, however tiny?

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2.13-16, Paul, and the gospel of Matthew

Bernard, you are not reading my posts carefully enough. I quote myself as saying something, and you say that you did not say that... well, yes, of course (!), that is why I quoted myself (!), and not you (!) saying it; to respond to a direct quote of myself by objecting that you did not say it is a ...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2.13-16, Paul, and the gospel of Matthew

What are your clues that Mark might have known 1 Thessalonians? 1 Thessalonians 4.15-17 I have not replicated the color you use for your quoted text [of 1 Thessalonians 4.15-17 and Mark 13.26-27], but I have replicated the boldfacing. Tell me, why are those words boldfaced? Are they perhaps the par...

Re: Gospel of the Hebrews

Thanks, David. :) This is the Latin translation (by Rufinus, apparently) of Josephus at the critical passage, along with my own quick-and-dirty translation: Orientalis autem porta interioris templi, cum esset aenea atque gravissima, et sub vesperam vix a viginti viris clauderetur, serisque ferro vin...

Re: Gospel of the Hebrews

Jerome also writes to Hedibia in epistle 120: In evangelio autem quod Hebraicis litteris scriptum est legimus, non velum templi scissum, sed superliminare templi mirae magnitudinis corruisse. But in the gospel which is written with Hebraic letters we read, not that the veil of the temple was rent, b...

Re: Gospel of the Hebrews

Does anybody know anything regarding the Gospel of the Hebrews-- particularly what was quoted by Jerome regarding the splitting of the lintels? I have no very cogent thoughts on the rest of what you asked, but I do have the text for you. From Jerome, On Matthew 4, commentary on Matthew 27.51: In ev...

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2.13-16, Paul, and the gospel of Matthew

Bernard, thank you for the link. Here are the relevant passages as you present them on your page: 1 Thessalonians: .... For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; [4...

robert j wrote:Yes, thank you. I haven't been following all of the thread as closely as I should. But, correct me if I'm wrong, you're still considering whether 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 (but not 4:13-18) may be an interpolation influenced by Matthew 24-25.
Yes, that is correct.

Re: 1 Thessalonians 2.13-16, Paul, and the gospel of Matthew

Who copied whom? Obviously Matthew from gMark. And Mark took liberties on Pauline material as he did for other items, such as the last supper. What about the passage as it stands convinces you that Mark drew upon Paul? What are the details that convince you of this intertextual relationship between...
