Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

Are there folks here who are really suggesting that author of Zechariah 6:12 has in mind some sort of celestial being? Maybe, but I would not know who. It seems to me that most are attributing the celestial being to Philo (whether alone or in concert with other Jewish exegetes), not to Zechariah. S...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

Are there folks here who are really suggesting that author of Zechariah 6:12 has in mind some sort of celestial being? Isn't the main proposal & argument that Philo proposed some sort of contemporaneous celestial being? No, actually I readily accept that Philo understood this to be an allegory ...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

Wow, This thread is really careening into deep space! Are there folks here who are really suggesting that author of Zechariah 6:12 has in mind some sort of celestial being? I didn't think people still used "angel dust" anymore, but horse tranquilizer is tranquilizer none the less. It makes...

Re: Visions and revelations in Josephus

Did Josephus describe the actions of hallucinated people that saw angels and demons in the sublunary realm? Is it possibile to see a link between the Josephian description of Jesus ben Anania and the prodigia happened in the Temple? Giuseppe, Considering that whatever grain was left in storehouses ...

Re: Why Cesarea?

It's likely that the NT narratives were finalized or redacted long after the events they are purported to portray, and its'f quite feasible that may of the narratives were first started far away from the regions they are purported to be set in. I think it's likely that the writers were deliberately...

Re: The "Son of Man" and Simon Bar Giora

As I had previously threatened promised, I have researched the matter of the possible origins of the name "bar Giora" in Josephus' description of the war leader Simon, as it relates to several proposals by the authors Riegel & Jordan. When the term "Son of Man" or "son o...

Re: Why Cesarea?

The journey of Jesus to Jerusalem starts in Cesarea (Mark 8:27, Matthew 16:13). Why just Cesarea? Was there some link with Cesarea as the residence of the Roman governor? And what was the point of the connection ''Cesarea-->Jerusalem'' ? Yes, Caesarea was where the Roman governors over Judea-Samari...

Re: Josephus and the Star Prophecy: two points

I have a list of star of bethelehem candidates 17-1bc from various sources but it refuses to let me post it. (Darn this annoying problem that keeps happening with various posts.) Most well known ones include Jupiter & Saturn conjunction in 7bc, and Venus & Jupiter 3 / 2 bc. Those "conj...

Josephus and truth. Why start now?

Cecil Roth, in the article "The Jewish Revolt Against Rome: The War of 66-70 CE" in Commentary Magazine, June 1, 1959, on the rhetoric of Josephus: ... [T]he judgments of the renegade Josephus have been accepted blindly for various reasons by the general run of historians. In Jewish histor...

Re: Carrier proposes the NT Jesus based on Philo's Jesus ang

I have no special knowledge of what might gone into such a translation to begin with, but it seems possible that the translators were thinking in terms of a family tree from which a Messianic descendant might branch off (even the Old French branche whence the English seems to derive appears to bear...
