Re: Do any Church Fathers state or imply that Jesus spoke Aramaic during his ministry (ie in gospel)?

I believe that it was Joachim Jeremias , in The Parables of Jesus (Engl transl 1955 by S H Hooke), who seriously pursued the idea that Jesus' parables as presented in the Greek language Gospels were best understood as reflecting an Aramaic language source. Jeremias does not, unfortunately, cite the ...

Re: What do we know about the revenue / expenditures of early churches?

I think Peter K. may have a copy, though. I was able to find his old website archived. "St. Ignatius, the Insidious Pragmatism of the Episkopoi of Rome and the Rise of Christianity" https://web.archive.org/web/20050203235802/http://thecosmiccontext.de/christianity/Ignatius1.html "Ign...

Re: What do we know about the revenue / expenditures of early churches?

I rooted around for Conley's article. I found it below, although it no longer seems to be posted online. It may once have been online at RadicalKritik (I have shurely spellded it wrong). IIRC, and this was 24 years ago, Conley drew upon his experiences researching a pamphlet for the Dept of the Army...

Re: What do we know about the revenue / expenditures of early churches?

What were their primary means of revenue (donations from individual rich donors versus average “member” collections)? What percentage of the revenue went where? This I am really interested in: what percent went to expensive incense and oil, what percent to feasts, what percent to aiding the poor, w...

Re: The Short Recension of Three Letters of Ignatius

To my untrained eye, the Syriac versions seem to be summaries of sections of the shorter Greek recension. I am not afraid of being shown the error of my ways, though. Do you have a feel for if the shorter Syriac leters of Ignatius refer to the Pauline Epistles in a way that is above and beyond what...

Re: The Short Recension of Three Letters of Ignatius

Here is that last one. The ET of the Syriac was already in the Romans epistle file, but here at least you can see what the the rest of the shorter & longer Greek recensions have to say. (Ignatius) Trallians (ETs of shorter & longer Greek & Syriac fragment, compared).pdf To my unt...

Re: The Short Recension of Three Letters of Ignatius

In days past (2015), whilst I was busy with my comparison of the Longer and Shorter (aka "Middle") Greek recensions of epistles where both shorter and longer Greek existed, I did compare them to the ANF version of Cureton's epistles. Interesting thing was, there are only three actual Syria...

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus

William R. Schoedel suggests that Ignatius had difficulty refuting his opponents solely from the OT ( Ignatius of Antioch , p. 209): ... it is still a challenge to the bishop's assertion that he can find what he wants in the OT. Evidently he was having difficulty in establishing his point from that...

Re: Further evidence that Ignatius faced old deniers of the historicity of Jesus

Hey Joseph, Glad to see you back! I think what Giuseppe has in mind is this passage in The Epistle to the Tarsians: Chapter III.—The true doctrine respecting Christ. Mindful of him, do ye by all means know that Jesus the Lord was truly born of Mary , being made of a woman; and was as truly crucifie...
