Re: Celsus Influenced the Ending of the Synoptic Gospels

Great observation! This corresponds with my recent discussion of John 17 in the thread Whose farewell speech is this? In John 17 the ethnicist Jesus is turned into an universalist, with the help of Paul who was oriented towards the Roman empire, the then ‘universe’. Maybe the author of gJohn was als...

Re: A key for Mark 4?

Maybe there is a simple connection between the two parts of the parable of the sower. The first part (verse 4-8) speaks about the road (ὁδός), followed by three major aspects of Palestinian geography or its vegetation: rocky ground in the hills and mountainous areas, maquis in the Jordan valley, and...

Re: A key for Mark 4?

Maybe we should also consider a political reading of Mark 4:1-34. To start we have to determine the setting of this fragment. I believe Jesus shows himself here as a propagator of God’s rule, in other words as a messianist, and not as the messiah (see also gLuke 4:16-21). In the view of the Zealots ...

Re: The gospel of John an independent witness?

I have C H Dodds “Historical Tradition in the Fourth Gospel” which sees John’s gospel as having access to separate sources from those used by the synoptic gospels. He states that the use of commons words are only those necessary to tell the same story. He states that the Old Testament testimonies a...

Re: Whose farewell speech is this?

Above I argued that the apostle Paul possibly didn’t die a violent death, but may have returned to Palestine where he pronounced a farewell speech in the Temple at the conclusion of his missionary career. This thesis conflicts with the content of 1 Clement V:2 on Peter and Paul: Through jealousy and...

Re: Whose farewell speech is this?

Flavius Josephus, born in 37 CE, is 26 years old in 63 CE.

Paul is shipped to Rome by Felix’s successor Festus in the autumn of 60 CE, arrival in Rome in the spring of 61 CE. Two years of house arrest until 63 CE.

Re: Whose farewell speech is this?

According to Christian tradition Paul was tortured and killed in Rome. Above I suggested, based on GJohn 17 and 1 Clement V:7, that maybe Paul safely returned to Jerusalem. The Dutch scholar Pierre Krijbolder is an interesting ally for this thesis. In 1976 (with a second edition in 1989 which I use ...

Re: Whose farewell speech is this?

CW, it is clear to me that under the surface of the New Testament the Roman empire is omnipresent, but not in the sense of a positive or neutral connection but in the sense of deep hostility. I continue my line of thought. In the OP I translated the κόσμος of GJohn 17 as ‘Roman empire’. Interestingl...

Re: Whose farewell speech is this?

Well, it belongs to Jesus in the gospel of John. Highly recognizable material, despite your unique translation choices. Or did you mean that it really sounds like somebody else's speech in some other body of literature? The Gospel of John indeed, chapter 17:6-19. It was not my purpose to make a rid...
