Jerome is generally cited as our only source for the pericope in the so called Gospel of the Hebrews which recounts a resurrection appearance to James the Just: Jerome, On Famous Men 2: § Also the gospel which is named according to the Hebrews, and which was recently translated by me into Greek and ...

No. It would just make thematic sense in terms of the proposal being floated in the OP.davidmartin wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 2:00 am is is necessary to have something iffy about female followers though, simply based on gender?

Re: The Gospel of the Egyptians
Another aporia, not called out in Clement's letter, is found in the third chapter of Mark: 20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. 21 And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” 22 And the scri...

Re: Canonical Paul, Acts, and Justin VS Paul, Valentinus, and Marcion
Interesting. Do you recall if the abbreviation was Chi followed by a noun case ending like U? This may help: http://earlywritings.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7828&p=121435#p121435 . And Coptic does not have noun cases. So they tend to be the nominative, as one would expect, when they are ...

Re: The Gospel of the Egyptians
I've also been playing with the idea that Mark 1:1-13 wasn't original, mostly due to the notices about Marcion omitting the same. However, I've been finding reasons to retain the text when I try to remove it. For example, this John the Baptist gets an introduction here, when otherwise not mentioned...

Re: The Gospel of the Egyptians
At some point, whenever the Beezebul controversy rears its head, it becomes necessary to dive into the synoptic problem. Neither Matthew nor Luke contains the attempt by Jesus' family to bring Jesus home as having lost his senses, though they do both retain their standing outside and Jesus identific...

Re: The Gospel of the Egyptians
In addition to the fact that Salome is eliminated from the other gospels, the reference to the women "who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him" suggest that there could have been earlier stories about the women who followed and ministered to Jesus. The backtracking...

Re: The Gospel of the Egyptians
And these ideas would also be understood by those who opposed the gnostic Christians. So that would be a motive for removing the stories that most clearly showed the gnostic doctrines in the Gospel. Accordingly, the fact that the story of the exorcism of the seven demons from Mary Magdalene has bee...

Re: The Gospel of the Egyptians
The fact that Mary is associated with an exorcism provides a full explanation for the reaction in Mark 3:22, suggesting that Jesus could have performed an exorcism on Mary Magdalene in the pre-Markan text at this point. Some kind of surprising saying -- such as "The son of man came to abolish ...
