Re: Text of Cyril of Alexandria Against Julian?
Thanks for the link, David. I can't get anywhere with the links to the individual works, unfortunately. When you click on them, you only get a conspectus of what's in the TLG, not an actual text, as far as I can tell. Once you click on a selection, you get the review page, but then click the highli...

Re: Text of Cyril of Alexandria Against Julian?
Does anyone know of a recent text of Cyril of Alexandria's Against Julian ? Since 1998, a team, consisting of Christian Riedweg, Markus Vinzent, and five others, has been preparing a critical Greek text w/ transl and comm. for de Gruyter, but it's not out yet, as far as I know. Books 1-5 are due ou...

Re: Is 'Serious Scholarship' Biased in Favor of Historicity?
. Someone once said that Crossan may often be wrong but at least he is wrong productively. I feel the same about non historicity. It is definitely not an 'assured conclusion' but allowing ourselves to consider it as a plausible hypothesis opens up interesting avenues if investigation that might oth...

Re: Jewish names in the first century?
The 80,000 residents figure includes both males & females. So the statistics need be redone using 40,000, which I am too rushed to do now ...

Re: Jewish names in the first century?
Peter, I looked at XTalk and I find mention of L.Y. Rahmani's Catalogue of Jewish Ossuaries in the Collections of the State of Israel , a journal article by Lemier (couldn't get title), and the usual garbage found in BAR. Here is what I reasoned about the matter then (2002): If I see one more articl...

Re: Jewish names in the first century?
I have seen some sources give frequency of names in first century Palestine. It's a good question, and I hope that someone can recall the source. Maybe it was Meier or perhaps Charlesworth? I think it came up in connection to the Testimonium and Ant. 20.9.1. And again in the debate over the ossuary...

Re: translation problems
Personally, I take the part of verse 5 after ὧν οἱ πατέρες [to them belong the patriarchs] to be an interpolation by a later editor who merged the high Christology of the Christians of his day into a more or less genuine Pauline letter, which is here (vss 9:1-8) praising his own ethnic stock in spit...

Re: translation problems
Here's another famous crux interpretum , the verse of Romans 9:5 where we might find that "the Christ" is "God" (or do we?). http://s9.postimg.org/3omi7zcsv/romans9_5.png So, is the current trend of calling "God, blessed to the age" (followed by "Amen") a sep...

Re: translation problems
The "rules" of NT Greek grammar have a tendency to come across, at least to me, as stilted and forced. Here is an example, posted in response to an online essay about interpretative "rules" for biblical narrative, here: http://www.postost.net/2010/05/narrative-premise-post-christ...

Re: Jesus crucified on a X
Hmmm, I didn't know you could play a TAPE backwards, but those old reel to reel tape players could do all sorts of neat stuff (I just couldn't afford one in the 70's). We just placed our forefinger on the record and forced the turntable to move in reverse, like DJs do today. The song you're thinking...
