Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.
1. Historical disciples of a historical Jesus had visionary experiences after his death which convinced them that he had been exalted and adopted as a son of God and as "God" in an elastic sense the way that "wisdom" and the "logos" and the Holy Spirit and the "An...

Re: Acharya S and the real Christ Conspiracy
Roger, you realize I hope that this person you are engaging is hopeless avi from the other forum (also called 'tanya' for awhile and other pseudonyms) Apparently the only thing avi is capable of doing is shedding new skin; the same stupid mass of ignorance and half-baked ideas remains beneath the su...

Re: Did Justin Martyr use Pauline epistles?
A parallel scenario. Tertullian references a parallel formula at the beginning of Book Four of Against Marcion. The Marcionites use a gospel that was 'according to Paul' but does not reference any human author on its 'title page.' It was just 'the gospel of Jesus' or 'the gospel of Christ' or 'the g...

Re: Did Justin Martyr use Pauline epistles?
As you can imagine, I have stupid opinions on just about everything related to earliest Christianity. My opinions are informed - insofar as I have read the primary material many times as well as what many experts in the field have said. Nevertheless I write from a rather idiosyncratic viewpoint (i.e...

Re: Ehrman's "How Jesus Became a God" is now out.
Yes, I am aware what he wrote there and it is not authoritative. It's just someone pretending to write something authoritative when he is just speculating. No one want to admit that they don't know way more than they know. This is especially true with scholars of early Christianity. I don't know how...

Re: Earthly Stranger vs Heavenly Stranger
One more thing that is worth noting. I am convinced that Irenaeus had a hand in manipulating the existing manuscripts. This isn't something that everyone else necessarily agrees with. But it is something that I think the evidence supports. If we have a Hebrew gospel and the Marcionite gospel (which ...

but he's not propounding any new personal theories here But isn't that a little like saying 'he takes the Patristic texts at face value.' I am not sure we can do that. The Ebionites certainly weren't 'poor,' the Borborites weren't 'dirty' etc. That's the problem with professional scholarship. It wa...

To understand the context within which gilgul (reincarnation) was interpreted in Job: Biblical verses and commandments were interpreted in terms of gilgul. The early sects to whom Anan was indebted saw the laws of ritual slaughter (sheḥitah) as biblical proof of transmigration in accordance with the...

Re: Loaves and Fishes
But you realize that the earliest Jewish commentaries understand there to be two 'men' in Genesis. The heavenly man made in the image and like the likeness (Genesis 1) and the earthly man of Genesis 2. Adam is not a heavenly or astral being.

Re: Earthly Stranger vs Heavenly Stranger
Thank you. I am glad someone is reading it. Here is what I find odd. Anyone who has ever read the Pentateuch knows there is very little than can be used to tell us about what is supposed to happen in the afterlife. The Christian exegesis of the gospel presumes that the Old Testament heralded the Pas...
