Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

I personally think that Paul's motive is transparent in Galatians as it stands. He is claiming — vehemently — that his gospel came from God, not from humans, so it makes sense that he should be at pains to play down the extent of his contact with those who were already preaching some form of gosp...

Re: The Judaizers would have favored the idea of an earthly Messiah

This talk of a 'mythical Jesus' doesn't make any sense historically Even if there was no actual man born and called 'Jesus' you can still have physical humans who claimed either to be his incarnation or represent him Of these there is a long list of names. Other than Jesus you have John, Simon M, Th...

Re: A synopsis of 2 Peter & Jude.

And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." [4] And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus." [5] On hearing this, they were bapt...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Hi Ben, no problem and I appreciate your reply When the Odes is placed early, say 50's AD, a lot of things fall into place First it explains Paul and that is no small thing. Instead of being a complete and total innovator, changing an original Torah observant Jewish group into something very differe...

Re: A synopsis of 2 Peter & Jude.

It always struck me, that the authors of letters such as 2 Peter had a heck of a lot of boldness to write as they did, given that Jesus did not talk that way and was rather mysterious and 'other' - here they come claiming to represent him all bold and angry... with absolute authority... they look an...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

Do with it what you will, but the answer did match the question. Sigh, yes ok I should of been more careful there and left out Sheol. It's only hell i'm concerned with as regards Paul I would prefer you to address what i'm really saying though not point out a silly mistake of mine! The whole concep...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

That bit in Romans isn't hell, it's just the traditional Sheol of Judaism You really have to scratch around in Paul's writings to find he held anything like that concept, and he never names it I see the Nazarene faction as being the original form of Christianity and that Christianity subsequently be...

Re: 1 Clement & the Gospel of Matthew?

If you want a concrete example consider 'hell' where does Paul ever mention it as a concept, or name it by any names Sheol, Gehenna, outer darkness, tartaros… you might bring up Thessalonians which is the closest he gets but Paul is hardly shy of threatening people, hell should fit right into his sc...
