Re: Anointing in Paul: 2 Corinthians 1.21-22 and 2.14-16.

... To put the question another way: are you saying only that the Kunigunde's (and my) argument is ineffective in establishing that XS (actually XN) abbreviates Christos here, or are you making the stronger claim that it is unlikely XS does abbreviate Christos , and it more likely abbreviates somet...

Re: Anointing in Paul: 2 Corinthians 1.21-22 and 2.14-16.

[hr] [hr] Ken, A couple of weeks before you posted this, KK responded to my question about evidence in Paul's letters for the Jesus figure to be a "Christ". KK admitted that "There may not be clear evidence", but suggested the very same two passages that you have here. I followed...

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark

I think Philo is an under-appreciated source for Paul. Not for direct citations, but rather for thematic elements. I suspect the author of GMark was familiar with Philo as well. I think the following from Philo is directly relevant to the issue at hand --- (120) Let not any one then fancy that the w...

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark

... I know that modern Christians sometimes interpret Mark's "I am" here as a reference to the divine name, YHWH, claiming identity and equality with God. I think that's a little nutty, but that's how they read it. I don't think the suggestion is nutty. Once again, I don’t have the time t...

Re: Jesus is not the Christ: A Reading of Mark

I don’t have time to elaborate much here now, so just a few very quick comments. For the sake of discussion --- If one assumes that Paul used the nomina sacra in his letters (even possibly came up with the idea to add a bit of mystery and mysticism to his letters about his about a JC figure). And as...

Re: Mark’s Use of Psalm 22

Why do you think that the author of GMark intended to express a Davidic understanding of Jesus with his use of Psalm 22? The events and experiences described throughout in the Psalm certainly do not seem to be those of David. Interpretations over time have suggested David, as well as a son of David...

Mark’s Use of Psalm 22 --- A Davidic Jesus?

From another Thread: ... GMark 15, Mark alludes several times to Psalm 22 (LXX 21), a psalm of King David ... imho the allusion to psalm 22 is not a fulfillment of scriptures, it's not a prophecy. Rather, it could mean that Jesus undergoes the experience of King David and is in some way David. Why d...

Re: minor spellings aside, any proposed cult of "Jesus the Good" evidence?

If SA will excuse me for 'pulling a Marcion' and selectively using portions of his writing. ... Paul more or less invented Christianity. ... Paul's letters were interpolated by "Judaizers." Paul developed a religion ... which was later ... adapted to a son of David expectation. Yes. I don'...

Re: minor spellings aside, any proposed cult of "Jesus the Good" evidence?

What evidence in Paul’s letters would indicate that Paul’s JC figure was an “anointed” savior (Christos) rather than a “good” savior (Chrestos)? There may not be clear evidence, but there are a few passages in which an "anointed one" (Christ) makes more sense than a "good one" (...

Re: The X-Files: Chrēstos / Christos / Χρειστος

If this is the only occurrence of the compound term in Philo, then it seems Blavatsky was paraphrasing and expanding what Philo wrote. In the Embassy to Gaius (210), Philo writes of λόγια "θεόχρηστα", (logia "théochrésta"), i.e. sayings "delivered by God” or "vouchsafe...
