What was the original logic behind Jesus's death?
So I'm wondering what the cause or purpose behind jesus's death was for the earlist christians, like paul. I gather paul thought christ's death freed humanity from the jewish law but is it because jesus lived a perfect life under the law and was still executed, invalidating the deal between god and ...

Re: Interesting statement in Romans 15
Very interesting find! I was just reading Thomas E. Phillips's When Did Paul Become a Christian?: Rereading Paul’s Autobiography in Galatians and Biography in Acts in Essays in Honor of Dennis R. MacDonald where he posits: I quickly came to believe that nearly all scholars, even the most widely resp...

Re: Funny thing about Acts... (Paul's trial)
I've seen many anachronisms and cultural misunderstandings pointed out in the gospels' trials of jesus (such as the timing of the trial, the type of charges brought against him, the way the trial is carried out, etc.) but do we know if Paul's trial in acts rings truer historically?

Re: Funny thing about Acts... (Paul's trial)
For one thing, what I suspect is that belief in Jesus wasn't the start of the communities of earliest Christianity. Most likely thee were existing "churches" that shared some set of Christian type beliefs, and then "visions of Jesus" were introduced into the cult. I hope this is...

Re: Papyrus 20915 and Barnabas
Wow! the entire article describing this 'berlin codex' makes it sound fascinating. The fact that the paper is 20 years old though with no english translation having appeared doesn't give me much hope for it showing up any time soon.

Re: 1 Corinthians 14:34, 35 Not Authentic Say Cambridge Scholars
To Ben and Stuart: Is your discussion here tangential to the specific paper mentioned in the link? I'm not in a great position to judge its merits but it sounds to me like the case for the offending verse to be "disputed" from the earliest witness is really strong, especially relative to t...

Re: Who'sonfirst? GMark As Separationist
I think this is good info too. I realize I was sometimes assuming or meaning separationist when saying adoptionist (by this definition) in my thread about GMark and the empty tomb. My question should have been, "Why would a seperationalist Mark need Christ to reclaim Jesus's body from the tomb?...

Re: Question on GMark's Adoptionism vs. the Empty Tomb
Another reading of John 's account of Mary meeting the risen Jesus is that the author is realistically depicting clinical shock. During a weekend of severe psychological trauma, Mary becomes fixated on the idea that the missing corpse has been moved. When Jesus comes along, she sees him as a functi...

Re: Question on GMark's Adoptionism vs. the Empty Tomb
So I was looking through all the NT post-resurrection appearances of Jesus to see which ones they recognized him in immediately, and which ones he had some other form. My purpose was just to look into the idea that if Jesus was going to appear to everyone as a stranger anyway, then there's even less...

Re: Question on GMark's Adoptionism vs. the Empty Tomb
Thanks very much to everyone who replied. There's definitely some stuff to chew on here. I'm going to check out the links to the papers from Ben and some of the other recommended material and see what jumps out at me.
