Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
"Mark's" (author) audience would know Pilate from Paul. (Okay, let me stipulate here for the sake of argument that Mark was written after 1 Timothy.) I take it, then, you are agreeing with my argument that Mark knew his readers would know who Pilate was (from 1 Timothy), and therefore did...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
I have no clue what the "other shoe" to drop will be (re: 'related to my disagreement'), so perhaps you can just put it all out there, so I will have a better idea of whatever you're saying. (Again, I had difficulty understanding you above.) I was not sure I was understanding you on all p...

Re: Mark's DiualCritical Marks. Names Use As Evidence of Fic
Hi, Joe. Normal vs. Unusual will be more subjective but the overall objective is to compare Gospels, especially the likely original GMark, with other ancient works, using the same criteria. It might help to keep a running tally of the individual criteria you are using to place the name (or lack ther...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
All very true. Great comments, as usual, Ben. Hi, Peter. Thank you. I have been mulling over how to respond to your post, but I decided I needed some clarification first. My post was meant to target specific readings of just this one verse in Mark (15.21) that point out supposed oddities; I had in ...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Jesus was also walking as if to "pass by" (not paragon, though) the disciples when he was walking on the "sea" of Galilee. Right. Not παραγω in this case. It is, rather, παρερχομαι , an important link to the theophany of Exodus 34.6. Ben. That's significant. I'll have to check t...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Does anyone have access to the TLG? Any other examples of paragonta? If the term is common then maybe it doesn't need any explanation. But if it is rare than we have a good argument it makes little sense standing naked in a section like this unexplained. I do not have access to the TLG, but in the ...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
And for me at least the 'switch' from Hebrew to 'passerby' means forget about making sense of the passage. It's corrupt and secondary. That's my position. I am considering that. I cannot say I am convinced yet that the Greek is a corruption of Hebrew, since it seems to make eminent sense on its own...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
Maybe I am not making myself clear enough but as I see it you have in Mark: ambiguous description of Simon 'a passerby' + detailed certain identification of who Simon is. Why can't Mark provide a better explanation of why Simon is in Jerusalem but nevertheless manages to track down this drifter to ...

Re: Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.
The role that Joseph of Arimathea plays in the narrative requires a more detailed introduction: he is a prominent member of the council so that he can actually secure the body, and he is waiting for the kingdom so that he would actually care to do so. If we take the text as it stands and do not disp...
